Description
The Antbear Guesthouse, originally built in the 1940's and recently restored by sculptor Bruce Attwood, gets its name from the previous resident, who lived beneath the floor boards before restoration. Eccentrically refurbished using wood gathered in the surrounding valleys, the Antbear combines comfort with a unique environment.
Using a fifty-year-old outhouse for the basic framework, Bruce created a unique guesthouse and home in the rural hinterland of Kwazulu-Natal. The original structure which belonged to a farmer friend, consisted of two traditional rondavels, or thatch covered huts, connected by a stoep, or veranda with an overhead trellis. Perched on a kind of natural platform overlooking the bushman’s river, the house has panoramic views of the Drakensberg Mountains. Relax, enjoy the view, take walks around the farm and savor the delicious food prepared by Andrew and Conny. There is a lot to be seen and done in the area. Participate in the farm life, feed the calves or watch the milking. Drive up to Giants Castle, the Champagne valley or Mont Aux Sources. Walk in the Drakensberg on day trips or even stay in a cave overnight.
Honeymoon Couples: We have just the perfect place for a honeymoon. We are a small guesthouse and we let our guests feel welcome in quiet and private surroundings. We do have one really special room a touch more romantic than what most places call their honeymoon suites. It’s such that you can even have a candlelit bath sipping champagne with the bath right in the room. The room is eccentrically furnished with homemade bed and cupboards. We cook great food which is the finishing touch to a perfect honeymoon.

The Antbear Guest House is all about artistic character based on Eco friendly principals. All the wooden furniture and artworks have been made here. Tables, lamps, cupboards, dressing tables, mirrors, chairs, doors and hinges.
Location:
Ideally situated to experience the Drakensberg Mountains. Easy access to both Central and Southern aspects as well as the best rock art available in the Drakensberg (Kamberg).
Food & Gastronomy:
Plan for slow and decadent dinners by candlelight. We grow our own herbs and vegetables and also own chickens for eggs. Of course all is done using organic principals and kind conditions to the animals.
Honeymoon Romance:
Experience our luxury Drakensberg cave where every night turns into a honeymoon And hammock chairs on the deck is beautifully private and makes for the perfect honeymoon experience or wedding anniversary.
Outstanding Views:
On a good day the view stretches out for 120 km to the Amphitheater but a normal day is only 90 km as far as Cathedral Peak. Infect, i am yet to see a more spectacular view from any accommodation anywhere.

Ideal Drakensberg retreat
Marc Gantzer de Saint-Bar, South Africa
22 March 2011
As always we fell under the charm of The Antbear, of its beautiful views and stunning, handmade wooden furniture and fittings. Welcoming and informative staff and hosts. Delicious food, prepared with the freshest farm produce add to enjoyment.
It is easier to reach/find than one wold think, and the perfect location to tour the central Drakensberg or the Midlands Meander.

Wow. We stayed at the Antbear Guesthouse for two wonderful nights. We could not have been made more welcome by the friendly hosts. This is the kind of guesthouse where you want to unpack your bags and never leave. Everything about our stay was first class. Our rooms were a delight and full of interesting handmade wooden furniture and fixings as well as extremely well equipped. The food, service and company were fabulous. The setting is ideal for exploring this part of South Africa an ...
