Our peaceful valley resort, which is 22 km out of Underberg, provides the perfect location for a retreat from city life. Here’s your chance to rest, listen to the river and the sounds of nature or spend some wholesome outdoor time with your family.

Families love it for the unhurried, Old World country atmosphere with days spent picnicking under the huge Oaks on the river island, boulder hopping in Thrombosis Gorge or just hanging about in boats. Honeymooners revel in the privacy of a luxurious suite and private deck just meters from the river bank. Fishermen love it for the unrivalled opportunities to catch rainbow trout along our 2.5 km stretch of river. To make sure you have a relaxing break, we have babysitters on hand to offer you solitude or an opportunity to enjoy a meal without having to mop up any spillages. Umzimkulu River Lodge has recently been awarded 3 Star grading in the self-catering category.

All our fully-equipped, self-catering units are situated just meters from the river bank with stunning views. All the units, except the log cabin, are equipped with log fires. All units have individual braai facilities. In winter a complimentary bundle of firewood is supplied on arrival and additional firewood is available to purchase thereafter. The units are serviced once daily in the mornings, excluding Sundays and Public Holidays. Should you require additional assistance, we can arrange to have a housekeeper available at an additional fee of R 15 per hour.

Activities at the lodge include bass and trout fishing, swimming, boating, tubing, canoeing, walking and birding. We have an a la carte breakfast and lunch menu and a set two-course dinner menu available. Meals are served in the dining room or on the deck overlooking the river. Come and experience restoration of body and soul in truly lovely surroundings.

Location: We are situated on the banks of the Umzimkulu River. Trout fisherman can walk out of the door and enjoy 2.5 km of prime river frontage.

Historical & Cultural: The Southern Drakensburg has been declared a World Heritage Site. There are a number of bushman paintings available in the district to view with a registered guide.

Pets Permitted: We have a number of units with wooden floors in which we are happy to accommodate the furry members of your family.

A wonderful and relaxing extended family new year break

We spent a wonderful and relaxing family holiday over New Year in Woodland Cottage at the lodge - it was really well set up for a large family group with kids coming and going and lots of people gathered around the table for eating, chatting and playing games. Had great fun tubing down the river and the kids spent hours riding bikes and playing in the river. A great place to relax and reconnect for a few days. Staff and owners very welcoming and helpful.

We had booked the cottage with a steep stair but my wife was concerned that one of us would fall. The resort kindly upgraded us to the other single accommodation, a beautiful room in an amazing garden. We had a wonderful stay. Our only mistake was going to Underberg for lunch, the Lemon Tree or some such, which was awful. Thanks.

We spent the long weekend in the Bower Cottage and thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff and owner are very helpful and pleasant, the food is very good, both breakfasts and dinners, and anything you ask for, they ensure you receive. The accommodation was cosy but comfortably big enough. We had an awesome weekend.

Just back from a fabulous two-night break at Umzimkulu River Lodge. I don't have enough good things to say. A magic location right on the river. Friendly super helpful staff, good, wholesome home cooked meals to order. The list goes on! Highly recommended!
