Description

Twin Gables Guest House is a family-run business. Your hosts are Dawn, Scott and Travis Petersen. Mamre is historically a Moravian Mission Station, and is well known for its many national monuments. It has a rich history of missionaries that came from Germany to spread the Christian faith. It also served as an outpost for the British Military. Subsequently, many of the surviving buildings have been declared national monuments, including Die Langhuis, Church and the Old Mill.

My brother Scott is the owner of the house, and the original concept, and design of the house was done by my late father, Leslie Petersen. He was a retired teacher by profession, with woodwork as his main subject. He was extremely passionate about woodwork, and was especially partial to furniture made of oak, yellow and black wood. Also as a keen historian, my father co-authored a book on the history of the Mamre Moravian Church. Copies of this book can be obtained either through me, Travis Petersen, or the Mamre Moravian Church.

Unfortunate personal circumstances and my father’s untimely passing meant that he could not enjoy the completion of the house as he envisaged. In trying to preserve my father's legacy, my mom and I completed the house in 2007. Because of my dad's love for woodwork, we decided to incorporate as much of his vision within the house. The interior is adorned with a variety of woodwork.

The whole ceiling in every room is made of solid plank, finished with an oak veneer, from its solid oak staircase, 10-seater Yellow/Black Wood dining table, to custom-crafted balcony balustrades.

The Twin Gables Guest House offers you an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Even though it is situated only 50kms from Cape Town, it provides all the peace and tranquillity one would normally associate with the countryside. The balcony provides breathtaking views of unpolluted clear blue skies during the day and evening skies filled with brightly-lit celestial bodies which light up the whole village.

Most of the guests are very pleasantly surprised once they have stepped into the house. It far exceeds what they would expect form a guest house, especially one situated in the relatively unknown village of Mamre.

Location: Only located 50 km or 40 minutes’ drive from Cape Town; centrally situated, between the Swartland regions of Darling, Malmesbury and Industrial town of Atlantis 7km. surrounded by Darling and Cloof Wine Estates Rocking the Daisies Festival.

Food & Gastronomy: You will be hard-pressed to find truly magnificent home-made South-African cuisine. The proprietor of Twin Gables Guest House, Dawn Petersen simply is an outstanding cook. She has delighted and enticed thousands of palettes across generations.

Historical & Cultural: Mamre boasts the 5th oldest church in South Africa, and it was built in 1818. It also has numerous other national monuments.

Relaxation: This is truly the ideal place to relax. You wake to the sounds of birds chirping,and horses neighing. A very relaxed and tranquil environment, with clear blue pollution-free skies. Almost no noises to disturb your sleep.

Lovely surprise

Twin Gables Guest House was a lovely surprise. I had to be in the area for a few days for work and this was the nearest accommodation. I was not expecting much from the tiny town of Mamre, but was pleasantly surprised by the warm and fastidious host, Travis, good beds, a generously proportioned guest house, and the possibility of good vegetarian food (not a regular strength of small South African towns!) I will definitely return when working in the area again.
