Wonderful surprise

The accommodation was beyond our expectations. The whole family enjoyed the experience in the tranquil setting, especially the swim in the river. My only negative comment is that the name of the place is wrong: it creates the perception that it is only suitable for a passover on your way somewhere, but the place is worth a visit as a destination in its own right. We surely did not want to leave the next morning.

Description

Traveller's Rest Farm is 34 km from Clanwilliam on the Wupperthal road, over the spectacular Pakhuis Pass in an area with ruggedly beautiful landscapes and fascinating rock formations. Koos and Haffie Strauss farm here with essential oils (from rose geranium), sutherlandia (kankerbos) for medicinal purposes, grenadillas, sweetcorn and rooibos tea in a place with a long and rich history. Haffie was born and raised on the farm and pioneered the provision of holiday accommodation in this area of the Agter-Pakhuis. The farm was named after the fact that long before the self-catering cottages and restaurant was built, passing travellers would outspan and water their horses and oxen before tackling the Pakhuis Pass or the dry Karoo to the north. The sense of history precedes even those years and a fascinating glimpse can be experienced of the world of the San, who inhabited the area for thousands of years, by visiting the rock art sites they left behind.

Discover a place where you can truly enjoy the wide open spaces, the fascinating and surprisingly varied plant and animal life, the rich legacy of the San, inspiring night skies and so much more.

The cottages are all delightful in their earthy simplicity and surprising in their homely, well-equipped comfort. Some are renovated labourers' cottages and some newly built in the same earthy style with local stone. Interiors are eclectic and colourful with natural reed ceilings, homely furniture, huge fireplaces for cold winter evenings and electric fans for hot weather. All the kitchens are equipped with cutlery and crockery, fridges, stoves and microwaves. Bed linen and towels are provided and an outdoor braai area (barbecue) completes the picture, for which fire wood can be bought on the farm. A shared swimming pool near the river and the restaurant brings relief after a hot day spent exploring the farm's hiking, mountain biking or 4X4 trails.
