Thobeka Backpackers

Thobeka Backpackers is a rustic and authentic African backpackers located in Kosi Bay, where life is simple and in harmony with nature. Set amongst lofty trees in a quiet rural setting, our bush-style lodge is situated close to beautiful beaches, game parks and lakes lined with palm and mangrove forests.

Thobeka is a restful place to gather thoughts and prepare travel plans for those travellers en route north to Mozambique. For those backpackers who have dust in their hair and clothes from game drives in Kruger and car rides through Swaziland, Kosi Bay is the perfect lagoon to wash away the dirt, aches and pains of days spent on the road.

We are a rustic self-catering backpacker crouched under large, broad-leafed trees. Providing self-catering accommodation and camping in true African style, we offer Twin Rooms, Double Rooms, Dormitories and Family Rooms. Each room is connected by wooden walkways that lead to fully fitted kitchens, hot showers and toilets, a swimming pool, and most important of all, the bar. You will not find a TV or a pool table, however you will find laid back sofas, hammocks and a bar with cold beers.

Each room is separated by a rustic wooden walkway, allowing you the privacy and space to kick back and enjoy uninterrupted relaxation time, and includes comfortable beds, mosquito nets and a fan for those warm lazy afternoons and balmy African evenings. Our self-catering kitchens are well-stocked with cooking utensils, crockery and fridges as well as tea, coffee and sugar. We also provide a laundry service at a small fee so you can put on some clean clothing after enjoying a hot, revitalizing shower.

Our braai area is located next to the pool and about three steps from the bar so you can braai, take a dip in the pool, a swig of your beer, and embrace the freedom that Thobeka affords. The fish from Kosi Bay Mouth can be cooked over the open fire and in the winter, around the boma.

Evenings at Thobeka Backpackers are reliant upon what you wish to experience. You could either sit around the fire, dance around the fire, beat your African drum, tell stories, have a kitchen party, or simply relax and gaze at the twinkling African night sky and listen to the sound of nature.

Local amenities are in close proximity to our African bush lodge, where you can purchase food products, local fruit and vegetables, and African souvenirs to take home with you to your family and friends. A petrol station and ATM are also in the vicinity.

Our staff, born and raised in the village, have a wealth of knowledge and experience of Zulu culture, history and the local village itself and will shower you with African hospitality that is teeming with the richness of the Mother Land providing you with an all-round authentic African experience.
