Description
The Hooting Owl guest house is a unique African thatch bushveld lodge set in a coastal environment. This hidden jewel was custom-built to blend harmoniously into its surroundings. The Hooting Owl is located in Marina Beach, on the Kwa-Zulu Natal South Coast, approximately two hours’ drive south from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.
The guest house is set in a sub-tropical forest with valley views and prolific bird life. Numerous bird species, vervet monkeys, grey and blue dyker and small bush buck inhabit the surrounding areas.
We provide our visitors with good quality, affordable self-catering accommodation. Choose from a large six-sleeper family unit with three double en-suite rooms, a three-bedroom, eight-sleeper self-catering cottage to our self-catering honeymoon cottage. We offer a range of accommodation to suite all tastes.
A starter pack of tea, coffee, sugar and milk plus a few toilet rolls will be provided. There is plenty of safe parking inside the premises; guests will receive a remote for easy access through the electric security gate during their stay. All guest areas are covered by an in-house alarm system linked to Chubb Armed Response.
The guest house can also be booked as a clothing-optional retreat for naturist groups by special arrangement, for complete peace, quiet and privacy, with valley views over the sub-tropical forest conservation area.
When the weather is good there are five Blue Flag beaches to choose from, Marina Beach or San Lameer being the closest. When the weather is bad there is also plenty to do, including horse riding, quad biking, bird watching, game drives, adventure tours, cultural tours, fishing, whale watching, diving, fine dining, spa treatments, shopping and much more. All activities can be booked in advance but it is not mandatory.

This guest cottage is double storey. Located on the ground floor is the master bedroom with queen-size bed with en-suite bathroom, which also boasts an outside shower area in a secluded garden. The second bedroom also has a queen-size bed and shares the second bathroom with the upstairs family room. Upstairs is a very spacious family room with four three-quarter beds. The open-plan kitchen, dining, TV lounge area completes the downstairs floor plan, and has DStv. Please bring your own smart card. The kitchen is fully equipped with all utensils and crockery for eight people. Bedding, towels and bath towels are supplied, however guests must bring their own pool and beach towels. We take pride in our 100% percale linen, hypo-allergic goose down duvets and pillows, which are crisp and cool in summer, but warm and inviting in winter.

The Scops-Owl Suite has its own entrance via a private patio, which is ideal for a sundowner or braai/barbecue under the large Natal Mahogany tree. The suite has rustic features in a modern style with a queen-size bed and en-suite glass shower bathroom. The suite has a small fitted kitchen equipped with all the utensils and crockery needed. There is a small dining nook and TV area with DStv. Please bring your own smart card. This unit is ideal for a couple on an intimate getaway weekend. Bedding and towels are provided, however guests must bring their own pool and beach towels. The unit has a ceiling fan, hairdryer, ironing board and iron. Each of the three bedrooms contains a queen-sized bed, bedside tables with lamps, a dressing table with a stool, wardrobe hanging space and a drawer unit. All rooms have rock effect en-suite bathrooms, hairdryers, cooling fans, as well as bed linen and towels. We take pride in our 100% percale linen, hypo-allergic goose down duvets and pillows, which are crisp and cool in summer, but warm and inviting in winter. There is a large comfortable TV lounge adjoining the fully fitted kitchen, both overlooking the pool area. The dining room is conveniently located close to the undercover braai area. Adjacent to the pool is an all-weather braai area with seating under shade. There is a bathroom conveniently located next to the pool and braai area with two showers. This unit may not be suitable for physically challenged adults or the elderly, due to the steep steps down to the unit from the parking area.
