A national monument and one of the oldest houses in Swellendam, The Hideaway boasts four very elegant, individually decorated rooms in a lush garden setting featuring a wealth of rose bushes, flowers, greenery, abundant birdlife and amazing views of the looming Langeberg mountains behind.

Relax under the vine-covered pergola with a glass of some of the region’s finest wine, or recline on your sun lounger on the sunny, manicured lawn
The Hideaway offers exceptional value and understated luxury. Each spacious, deluxe air-conditioned suite opens directly onto the large, private garden and is furnished with fine handcrafted furniture, antiques and beautiful original paintings and photographs.

The indoor pool, The Wallow, is ideal for relaxing after a busy day’s sightseeing or after a good meal. It is enclosed by large sliding glass doors which open onto the garden and the water is solar heated to ensure the perfect temperature.

Our internationally famous English-style cooked breakfast and extensive Continental breakfast is personally prepared by Stephen and Jackie, to order, each morning and served with fresh home-baked scones, muffins and complemented by home-made preserves and jams, fresh fruit juices and plenty of fresh fruit, yoghurt and honey.

Of 6 B/B's visited in 7 days, this one was the absolute cherry on the top.!!!! Our 4 Australian guests ,who travelled with my husband and I, were blown away as well, with Mark and Diana's hospitality. The breakfast was superb, especially the muesli and bread( yummy!!), the stunning rooms, the attention to small details, the conversations, their enthusiasm with Swellendam---this B/B should be awarded again and again. We will be back ----- thanks Mark and Diana.

Queen Elizabeth Suite

The ceilings of this suite are of Spanish reed and are tied in the traditional manner. The beams are local Pine. The king-size bed was made by our cousin Adin from Canary Pine to his own design, as are the side tables and lamps. The mattress was custom made for us by the School for the Blind in Worcester. The sleeper couch (day bed) is another one of cousin Adin's carpentry originals and is made from indigenous woods; namely Black Ironwood, Stinkwood, Yellowwood and Leadwood. To convert the couch into a bed, the backrest is simply lifted out. The cupboard and dressing table are early 20th Century oak pieces that for many years were resident in Silverhurst, Constantia, and were inherited by cousin Adin from his mother. On being restored they were found to have been painted green on top of white on top of a dark stain. The windows are made from Blackwood in the traditional Victorian style.

Double Delight Suite

The ceilings of this suite are of Spanish reed and are tied in the traditional manner. The beams are local Pine. The queen-size bed is made from Yellowwood and Kiaat to cousin Adin's design, as are the side tables which are made from Canary Pine and Cypress. One of the lamps is Yellowwood and the other Hard Pear. The mattress is the latest Sealy Posturepedic Plus which, we think, you will find a superb mattress. The coffee table and side tables are made from Tambuti, a wood that grows north of Pretoria. This is an exceptionally hard and heavy wood giving off a slightly astringent aroma. African tradition believes that by keeping a piece of this wood in your room, all flu's, mosquitoes, etc., etc., including tokoloshes (gremlins), will be kept away. The chairs are genuine leather made by Coricraft of Cape Town. The Yellowwood kist at the foot of the bed was made by Adin from old beams extracted from the first building erected at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. The cupboard and dressing table are made from Kiaat, the top of the dressing table being Black Ironwood and Yellowwood. The windows are made from Blackwood in the traditional Victorian style.

Peace Suite

The two single beds and dressing table are made from old Stinkwood and were manufactured in Pretoria at the turn of the 19 th Century. The coffee table was made early in the 19th Century for the Cloetes of Cape Town and is in fact made from Stinkwood that was cut in the mountains behind Swellendam. The chairs are genuine leather and made by Coricraft of Cape Town.
