About Thaba Nkulu Game Ranch and Fish Eagle Spa

Fish Eagle Spa is situated 38 km from Aliwal North on the R58 to Lady Gray and 15 km from Thaba Nkulu Game Ranch. The spa is a getaway from the stresses of urban life situated 300 m from the Orange River, and is a great place to relax and unwind with the added bonus of the health spa water which is a constant 36 degrees. Come to the natural sulphur hot spa and get back to nature. Fish Eagle Spa is very secluded and all power comes from solar and cooking is with gas.

Fish Eagle Spa forms part of Thaba Nkulu Game Ranch and offers three double bed and breakfast rooms, with the added attraction of a 1,600 hectare game park for guests to explore in their own vehicle or take a guided drive with the game ranch staff.

When the current owners of the spa started Thaba Nkulu Game Ranch in 1996, Dr Naude recalled seeing hot water coming from the ground on the farm Badts Fontein close to the Orange River and thought that it would be a wonderful addition to the game ranch, offering its own private hot spa. Dr Naude approached the owner who agreed to sell and the Fish Eagle Spa came to life. A period of four years passed while the area was re-zoned from agricultural land to tourism use.

First built was a natural Jacuzzi which ran into a big pool with a built-in bar and a kiddies fun pool. The spa became very popular, but a problem arose as mud accumulated in the Jacuzzi every time heavy rain hit the area, and the pools were either washed away or filled with sand. A contractor was then brought in to build a huge wall above the pools to redirect the excess water.

Safari: Thaba Nkulu Game Ranch offers 1,600 hectare game park for guests to explore in their own vehicle or take a guided drive with the Game Ranch staff.

This was a pleasant surprise after the last few weeks of travelling through Gauteng on business. The room was spotless, very comfortable and in a very pretty garden setting. The meals were well prepared and delicious.

The Museum is only about a 10 minute walk from the start of the mountain hiking trail and a wonderful place to see how the old lived in our area. Smithfield was first founded in 1848 as a church centre on the farm Waterval, owned by CS Halse. As...
