Description
Tankwa Tented Camp is situated in the Stonehenge Nature Reserve with a total area of 3200 ha and with a 24 km fence. The reserve is bordered by the Tankwa National Park on two of its sides for about 14 km.
The Tankwa River runs through the farm, but it only comes down after heavy rains. The annual rainfall of the area is about 80 mm, making the area the driest part of South Africa and also one of the most rarely populated areas in South Africa. The vegetation is mostly Gann bush on the low lying areas. The Hoodia or also known as Gharp, grows naturally on the property with the stones having a mix of colours mostly formed by oxidation over millions of years.
There are 13 permanent ripstop canvas tents covered with shade cloth. The original farm house is used as a communal kitchen and lounge area for the self-catering tents. The tents also share communal toilets and showers. Warm water is supplied by a donkey system with wood. Power for the lights in the tents and kitchen comes from a generator which is switched off at 11 pm. The kitchen has the basic cutlery and crockery for 26 people. The beds in the tents have fitted sheets only.
