Shangazi House

Built along the foothills of Mount Meru in northern Tanzania, Shangazi House offers acres of gardens and woodland, with views south and east across Maasailand. A 10-minute drive takes you up into Arusha National Park, the home to deep calderas and Colobus monkeys. The Colonial-style main house and four outlying cottages provide not only great privacy and comfort, but also the luxury of the cooling breezes coming off the mountain. Shangazi is the perfect place to explore and experience the mysteries of Africa and is located in Usa River, about half way between Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha, the gateway to the Serengeti.

Set in the shadow of Mount Meru, a part of the volcanic chain that makes up Africa’s famed Rift Valley, the lodge is conveniently close to the amenities of the city, yet still gives one the feeling of living in the traditional African bush. From Shangazi, it’s easy to travel to any number of places, from Kili to Mkomazi to the Ngorongoro crater.

Originally built as a private home, the main house is spacious and comfortable, with a veranda that overlooks a sweeping landscape of flower beds and huge native trees. The four garden cottages sit just to the east of the main house with tranquil views not only of the gardens, but also of distant Tanzanian landscapes. The interiors are all done in a traditional African Colonial-style, with many pieces designed and created by local artisans.

Accommodation is offered in six Double Rooms, four of which can be used as triples. Two of the rooms have en-suite rooms and adjoin, so they can be opened up into a family suite. The Cottages are doubles and contain a bathroom and veranda. Both the Cottages and Double Rooms are fitted with luxurious walk-in mosquito nets, and hairdryers can be provided upon request.

Features include a swimming pool next to the main house, and fireplaces in the lounge and dining room for the cool season. Besides a wonderful sense of privacy, great service and lovely beds, you’ll eat delicious, freshly cooked cuisine made with locally produced ingredients, including vegetables from Shangazi’s own gardens. There is also a full service bar next to the pool, and plenty of special spots both inside the main house and on the verandas for relaxing, reading, or simply taking in the afternoon light. Internet is available and laundry services are possible, time permitting.
