Description
Nestled in the hills between Barrydale and Ladismith in the scenic Little Karoo, an arid semi-desert located near the southern tip of Africa, you’ll find a welcoming oasis. Rietfontein, a working fruit farm, lies on the southern foothills of the rugged Touwsberg Mountains. With an abundance of small game and a wealth of birdlife and flora, it’s the perfect getaway for nature lovers and hikers. Physically, this region is sandwiched between the mountains of the Cape Fold Belt, in particular the spectacular Swartberg mountain range, with many peaks above 2000 metres and the Langeberg, Outeniqua, Kammannasie and Kouga mountains situated to the south. The accommodation on Rietfontein is comfortable and uncomplicated, with the emphasis on the beauty of the breathtaking natural surroundings. The Eagle’s Nest is adjacent to the farm manager’s house. The accommodation is open plan with a kitchen, dining room table and sleeping area with a double bed and two double bunks (i.e. sleeps 6). There is a separate bathroom with shower, basin and toilet. All bedding, towels and kitchen equipment are supplied. All you have to bring along is your favourite food, wine and beverages! Greenwood Guides Wording Boldly going where no man had gone before (I willfully imagined), mission in hand and hands on the controls, I pressed on through the otherworldly veld that stretched before me, billowing dust masking the tracks behind me. And what a magical destination I discovered… a small, blossom filled valley in the heart of Karoo country, a gloriously green oasis, teeming with life. Scattered within are five renovated farm cottages all connected by paths or footbridges that criss-cross their way through the pepper trees and reeds that divide them. Comfortable and unfussy, many of the beams inside and all of the sturdy furniture have been constructed using original train-track sleepers. Each cottage has its own flame-torch-lit verandah, outdoor braai and fire area. Do make sure you bring everything you’ll need as this is pretty well off-the-beaten track stuff. Speaking of tracks, a network of mountain-biking, driving and hiking routes have been specially mapped out for you in the rugged Touwsberg Mountains all around. If that sounds rather exhausting you can just as easily spend your time within the sanctuary of the valley – a spot of pétanque perhaps, or how about a G&T at the fresh-water pool’s very own thatched (BYO) bar? That’s the daytime covered. As for the night, there’s only one place to be… stargazing from the telescope mound into the extraordinarily dark heavens above.
