The Purple House in Smithfield is one of the oldest houses in town. You will be staying in the same room that the famous South African painter, J.H. Pierneef, lived in for two months whilst working on replicating old bushmen paintings in the hills around the town, all the way back in 1935.

The room is nice and comfortable with oregon floors and high ceilings. The unit is fully renovated and sports a queen-size bed, an inflatable mattress for a child, a dressing table and an antique cupboard for your clothes. The private bathroom is situated next door and has a bath and shower.

Coffee and tea-making facilities are provided in your room and we also have a small café in the garden. Dinners and breakfasts are served in the antique shop and art gallery inside the house.

We had a very interesting stay at purple house. Had it all to ourselves for both nights, surrounded by artworks. Johan was never far away, always there to see that we were comfortable and not in lacking in needs. Dinner was out of this world, very healthily prepared and reasonably priced. All in all a very enjoyable stay.

We stay at Purple House as a stopover on our way to our final destination. It was perfect for what we needed. The room was simple and clean with lots of art work to admire throughout the house. Johann is a good, friendly host and let us use the whole house even though we were just 2. Breakfast was very good.

Friendly though definitely funky, this old style house, painted fuschia with orange pillars, is a veritable treasure trove of art and objects, many for sale. The small town offers little light pollution for clear skies and star gazing.

The Bluegum Cottage is situated in our second house on the property of The Purple House B and B. It consists of a downstairs room with two single beds. There is an upstairs room with a queen-size, extra length bed leading on to a stoep with a great view of the surrounding hills. The bathroom downstairs has a walk-in shower, antique bath and basin. It is situated under a huge bluegum tree and offers a real farm like atmosphere in the centre of Smithfield. It is quiet and only a minute's walk into the Purple House where you will have breakfast at R40 per head. Dinner is served here as well if needed.
