This stylish 1830 homestead is centrally situated in the heart of the port capital of South Africa, Calitzdorp, overlooking port vineyards and within walking distance of all the wineries, galleries, shops and the museum in town.

The thatch roof homestead in Karoo and Victorian architecture has large vine-covered patios, where you can enjoy the Karoo sunsets, scrumptious dinners and breakfasts. Relax in the lush garden, including a fragrant rose garden, or by the sparkling pool.

Rouvé and yours truly, travelled from Langebaan via Calitzdorp to Pretoria to postpone the inevitable part of our vacation. We booked in advance based on other reviews of PWGH. We were pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at PWGH. The attention to detail, the friendliness and hospitality and the breakfasts prepared by Melisa will remain part of our memories. As I've said to friends and family, we've enjoyed our two night stopover at PWGH as much and maybe even more than the rest of our holiday. In our book of places to stay, PWGH is highly recommended. The location is absolutely perfect and within walking distance from three extremely well know PORT cellars. After a visit to all three, PWGH is also within crawling from the nearest cellar. Go for it and stay at the PWGH where you will also experience Pierre speaking to you in Afrikaans, English, German and most likely a few other languages.

Everything was great - excellent - Only complaint is that the bed is really small for 2 people.

This is a fine place with a beautiful, large garden. The décor was original and fine. We had an exceptional homemade dinner of lovely Karoo lamb and divine dressing. It was great for our family ranging from the ages of 19 up to 55 years.

Although Calizdorp is a smudge on the map before you cross a bridge and scoot down Route 62 (don't forget to stop at Ronnies and say hi), if you are a wine drinker or a familly looking for a stop to gather your thoughts, stop! Find Pierre and grab a room for at least a night. Pierre has set out extremely comfortable accommodation in a wholesome venue that is clean, well presented and uncomplicated. For us it was a pleasure to be able to walk the streets and sample well-known wineries such as Boplaas within a five-minute walk of the front door. I must agree that it is hard to review this splendid gem in the Klein Karoo without stating that nothing happens in Calizdorp at night, other than the quaint restaurant called Lorenzo's that served up the most splendid food. His company, banter and food was excellent. A very well run venue providing safety and comfort. Fantastic breakfast. Nice and quiet for a family retreat and great wines for a group that wants to lay low for a weekend. The only drawback for visitors coming from areas that are bombarded by television and mass media, will be the 'quiet hours'. Our stay was wholesome, comfortable, and we were well rested. Pierre's attention to the welfare and well being of the guests deserves credit and his holistic approach made the following day's trip to Cape Town a most relaxed venture. We took back about 4 liters from Boplaas to Perth. Thanks Pierre.

Calitzdorp was not really what we expected. I guess it has changed a lot. Yet, it was a useful place to overnight. The PortWine Guesthouse is beautiful and feels quite luxurious.
