Morning Glory Cottages

The Morning Glory Cottages are located between the Gariep Dam and Venterstad in the Eastern Cape. The cottages are perfectly situated, 600 km from Johannesburg and 800 km from Cape Town on the R58 and next to Lake Gariep, the largest inland water mass in South Africa.

The cottages form part of the old family farm of Gelykfontein, which is a well-known race horse stud farm that was established in 1935 and the van der Walts are the fourth generation of the van der Walt family to run the farm. Gelykfontein is a working farm also known for its Nguni cattle, Rubicon merinos, indigenous veld goats, and game. Enjoy peace and tranquility, glorious sunsets, clean drinking water, and stars so clear they can only be found in the Karoo. This is the place where the water meets the sky.

We also offer conference facilities for small groups, as well as facilities for team building weekends, field walks, bird watching, game drives, 4x4 routes and game drives to the adjacent Oviston Nature Reserve. We are just 9 km from the nearest shore of the great Lake Gariep with its shoreline of 435 km and there are numerous activities in the vicinity including power boating, sailing, waterskiing, and bait fishing. We also have hand-reared farm animals such as kids and lambs, which is a special treat for children to watch at feeding time.

Accommodation is offered in the form of two cottages which have been divided up into separate units, each with its own entrance. Each unit is fully equipped with linen, towels, ceiling fans, heaters, electric blankets, tea and coffee-making facilities, microwaves, and fridges.

In addition, we offer true Karoo Cuisine including Karoo lamb at its best, served in the friendly atmosphere of our dining room, or you can enjoy a braai in the lapa next to the splash pool. You can also have your own braai, and braai packs are available by prior arrangement. A hearty farm breakfast is also served either in the dining room or on the patio.

Each unit is fully equipped with linen, bath towels (please bring your own towels for swimming), roof fans, heaters, electric blankets, coffee/tea station, microwave and a fridge.
