Description

Montagu Guano Cave Resort is a hidden gem located at the foot of the Langeberg mountain range in the Klein Karoo, where you can find healing and rest for your soul. Montagu is on the scenic Route 62, only a two- hour drive from Cape Town and the town of Oudtshoorn.

Just 6 km outside of Montagu, on the road to Barrydale, awaits a day of activities and exploration. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy, including tractor and horse rides to the cave, pony rides, hiking trails, 4x4 trails, fishing, an animal petting farm and a coffee shop.

For in-house guests there are four beautiful rock pools, two hot-water swimming pools and one cold-water swimming pool, as well as a hot-water kiddies pool. There is also a lapa with braai facilities at the pools for pool lunches, an open-air amphitheatre, and a large playground and jungle gym for the kids.

The Montagu Cave, also called the Guano Cave, consists of a large, high chamber at the back of which is an opening to a smaller and longer tunnel-like cave once filled with bat guano. In the 1890s, the guano was emptied out. Housing thousands of bats, the cave goes back as far as hundreds of metres, some of which are still to be explored. A bushman painting greets you at the mouth of the cave, telling you stories of a long time ago.

In 1964, an American archaeologist, Charles Keller, excavated and dynamited a third of the main chamber of the cave and found, buried among ash and red sand, several thousand artefacts shaped like spear-heads. His conclusion was that the cave was a factory site in which, some 20 000 to 50 000 years ago, hand-axes and other tools were made.

Wedding Venues: The beautiful stone-built venue can accommodate up to 160 guests.

Children's Facilities: We offer pony rides, an animal petting zoo and a kiddies swimming pool to keep the young ones entertained.

Nice quite rest full place to camp with your caravan.

31 December 2013

It is a very nice resort but the camping experience was not great. The pools, shops, animals and especially the caves are great - the staff were also nice - but not the camping. We had 2 sites but our sites did not have any shade - and one of the two sites was waterlogged: sites B1 and 2. (others do have shade but not site B1-6 beware) also the apricot pips used to cover the gravel hurt your feet so you always have to wear shoes or slops. They have great plans for the near future - Supertube, ski lift, ziplines and I'd love to visit again - but not camping - at least not on those sites - maybe the shaded ones.

Establishment's response

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your review, as we are a newly established resort of 4 years, some of the campsite trees that were planted is still very small, however we are in the process of providing shade-nets for the camp sites without shades. We have also already started planting grass on some of the sites, A 11-14 and B 11 and 12, hopefully by June we will be finished with most of the sites. The reason for the pips was a temporary solution for the dust.

Hope to see you again,
