MelvilleMeerkat promises a comfortable and memorable stay in Johannesburg. The house has original wooden floors and pressed ceilings, and each room is filled with antiques and beds decked in fresh cotton percale.

A wine and book collection are housed in the dining room where guests are welcome to read at leisure. Many of the books are first prints and/or rare editions, and some are for sale.

Parking is available on the premises and guests can arrange to be collected from OR Tambo International Airport, Park Station, and the Gautrain. Internet access is available, and all rooms are heated and equipped with full DStv.

A popular tourist choice, Melville is a central location for the visitor to Johannesburg. The jostling city centre is to the south and Sandton and Rosebank to the east, all within easy range. Close by are the Universities of Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand, SABC Headquarters, Constitutional Court, and the Milpark and Garden City Hospitals. Restaurants, antique shops, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, and the stone age relics of the Melville Koppies create an interesting variety for local and visitor alike.

Your hosts are experienced travellers around South Africa and can advise guests on trips in and around Johannesburg, as well as some very remote attractions throughout South Africa.

I stayed at the self-catering cottage. The woman who interacted with me was friendly and attentive. Linens were changed often and a lady came to clean the cottage once out of the 14 days that I stayed there. Overall, the self-catering unit is nice with a lovely kitchen, high ceilings and lots of lighting. In fact, the lighting was too much in the bedroom in the mornings, it being summer, and the shades allowed too much light to filter in. There were two twin beds in one of the larger rooms, which allowed me to spread out. However, one of the beds I slept on wasn't too comfortable for my back.

A house filled with beautiful antiques and books in an old, characterful part of Melville. I enjoyed the stay and can strongly recommend MelvilleMeerkat to people who do not want to spend time in an impersonal, superficial place.
