Unwind in the tranquil atmosphere of our intimate and unique Venda styled lodge surrounded by African bush.

Tucked away in a steep valley, surrounded by impressive rocky outcrops, on the site of an abandoned Venda settlement, lies our small lodge which gets its name from the sacred Mashovhela rock pool, "Place where the drums beat". Be pampered by our warm and friendly staff that offer excellent, attentive and concerning service. Our 10 cozy rooms, restaurant, cocktail bar, conference venue, boma, swimming pool, arts and crafts shop where all built to minimize the ecological footprint and are run on a sustainable energy program. Mashovhela Lodge offers comfortable accommodation in the Louis Trichardt and Soutpansberg Area.

Relax in our unique ethnically decorated chalets that evoke a special Venda village atmosphere.

Our 10 intimate en-suite chalets, decorated by Ingrid Hahn, have a unique ethnic feel, whilst offering complete comfort and privacy. Children are accommodated in our family friendly units. The call of bush babies, the hooting of Giant Eagle Owls and chirping of cicadas and frogs will break the silence of the night whilst you stretch out on our luxurious "king size" or twin beds.
From your own private veranda surrounded by "magube" walls you can enjoy a cocktail under the African sun, whilst watching the Black Eagles returning to their nest.

We like the area for its outstanding biodiversity. Due to management changes we experienced some problems, but we were granted free beverages for the inconvenience. Generally good value for money.

Service was superb. Great location. Very warm welcome. But... Not having a kettle or minibar in the rooms makes it less than ideal for traveling with toddlers. (I must add that we were initially booked to stay in a safari tent which is even less ideal for toddlers, but we were accommodated in a another room at no extra cost within 20m of arriving.) The place has lots of potential and is set in breathtaking surroundings, but the experience was a bit surreal at times. On NYE the main course of the dinner consisted of rump steak and a big bowl of yellow rice. By 9PM the already unimaginative music was replaced by some hardcore metal music. In general the lodge has the air of a place that could easily fetch twice its rate per night if only some basics (including the dirt road leading to the lodge, air-conditioning, bar fridge, on-site kiosk for basic snacks etc) were given some attention. Since the service was superb (all our requests were speedily and warmly accommodated) I am not sure where the disconnect is happening, but I sincerely hope the owner steps in and saves a potentially breathtaking lodge from demise.)

Children's Facilities: Playground for children, swimming pool, guided and un-guided walking trails, scenic drives.

Honeymoon: Honeymoon package of four nights with all meals included available with a wide variety of activities included: a scenic drive in an open 4x4 vehicle, a walk to the sacred Mashovhela Rock Pool, three course candle light dinners, Venda dancing.

Safari Tent Camp

Something different in the Soutpansberg Mountains offering comfort and privacy under canvass with en-suite facilities. Experience the African Bush in a Safari Tent, there is no better way of experiencing a night in Africa than sleeping in one of our en-suite safari tents. The bush feels much closer and the night noises all that louder. Even though there is nothing more romantic than a night under canvass our Safari Tent can sleep up to four people, making them ideal for families as well. A private outside porch allows you to relax and take in the beauty of our reserve and the sounds of birds going about their day to day lives.
