The harbour has a very shallow rock bottom, making it unusable for modern ships. The town kept its sleepy, old-world atmosphere and the weather is cool and often foggy along the Atlantic coast. Sailing and boating activities on the lagoon are popular, as well as scenic walks and drives where you may see wild desert horses and dramatic landscapes.

Nearby, in the Forbidden Zone/Sperrgebiet of Namibia, lies the abandoned ghost town of Kolmanskop, which is almost covered in Namib Desert sand and a reminder of the past.
