On the fringe of the Grand Karoo, the Lord Milner Hotel, the last authentic vestige of Victoriana, sits in all its past glory as a must stop on the N1 national highway linking Cape Town to Johannesburg and the northern part of South Africa.

The Lord Milner's 58 guest rooms have been well maintained over the years and a high standard of service is upheld. The Royal Lounge is open for guests; enjoy a dinner, liqueur or coffee in the historical ambience.

The courteous staff, the clean crisp air and the warmth of the atmosphere surrounding the hotel makes for a relaxing and revitalizing stay. A pond, fountains, river bed and beautiful lush gardens can be seen around the hotel and guest rooms. The town itself is full of historical features and interesting things to do, such as museum tours and bus trips on the old London bus.

Along with the blood-red sunsets, remarkable fauna and flora and its age-old traditions, Matjiesfontein and the Lord Milner Hotel lends itself to the ultimate tranquil escape.

A grand old building providing a comfortable bed, lots of hot water and tasty food. All one wants for an overnight stop-over. We arrived early enough to visit the extremely interesting museum in the station buildings - what a marvelous collection.

A stunning looking building in a pretty village (hamlet?) but it doesn't live up to the promise. small room with no aircon; dodgy plumbing; only one (difficult to reach) power point, already powering lamps etc; mediocre food served by not-very-friendly staff. However, the pool is great and the 10-minute bus tour is fun.

The Lord Milner is an amazing time capsule hotel in the British colonial style. Sadly its grandeur has faded somewhat but it is still endeavouring to maintain its former standards. The small garden room was fine with a view overlooking the gardens. Unfortunately it was invaded by ants late at night and we were forced to change rooms. The hotel did offer us 30% discount on the room after some minor wrangling, which was satisfactory. The meals (dinner and breakfast) in the lovely dining room were excellent.
