One of the largest private game reserves in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Kwandwe is owner run and managed, with a strong focus on conservation and community development. The 22,000 hectares of pristine wilderness extends along 30 km of privately owned Great Fish River frontage.

Kwandwe aptly means "Place of the Blue Crane" in Xhosa. We are home to a variety of wildlife species including the Big 5 which consists of lion, black and white rhino, elephant, buffalo and leopard. The reserve will also delight birdwatchers who are able to observe protected species such as the Blue Crane and Martial Eagle.

Guests can participate in day and night game drives, walking safaris with experienced trackers and sleep-outs on specially designed platforms. Also on offer are specialised activities such as rhino darting, carnivore research and fixed-wing flights following the route taken by early settlers. Kwandwe's reception building is a Frontier War-era fortified homestead, and the reserve boasts its own intimate chapel.

Kwandwe features three beautiful intimate safari lodges and a private villa that offers world-class sophistication and style.

A member of the renowned Relais & Chateaux association, Kwandwe is located in a malaria-free area, is ideal for families and forms a natural conclusion to a journey along the world-famous Garden Route.

Great Fish River Lodge features African-inspired décor with earth-toned fabrics and early settler artefacts. Melton Manor can be booked as a sole-use safari villa or each of the four en-suite bedrooms can be booked individually. Combining the very best elements of Uplands Homestead and Ecca Lodge, this is a contemporary Frontier farmhouse with added warmth and humour. This spacious U-shaped lodge is characterized by high ceilings and deep, cool verandas, each overlooking the central courtyard and its large swimming pool. Uplands Homestead is a restored farmhouse dating back to 1905 with an ‘Out of Africa’ character. It is available as a sole-use villa only and is ideal for families, friends and small groups. It features three spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and private verandas. Two rooms have bathrooms with a ball-and-claw bath and one room has a bathroom with an oval stone bath. Living areas include a sitting and dining room, and farm-style kitchen. Enjoy outdoor dining under the African stars and an inviting large swimming pool and gazebo.
