Circled by hills on three sides, Klipkraal is a 14ha hobby farm in the Groenfontein valley, 13km from Calitzdorp. We offer a rustic-luxury cottage, which was once an old kraal and later a barn with thick walls and riet ceilings insulated with clay. Bringing the cottage into the present we’ve remained faithful to these strong traditional roots and the resultant atmosphere, right down to the wonky clay walls, is a romantic spot tailored for a couple wanting to be away from it all.

The furnishings and decor befit a romantic Karoo escape. There is a Queen bed with pure cotton linen and a mozzie net draped above; a Victorian bath with a view of the snow-capped Swartberg in winter; a kitchen area fitted with a stainless steel Eurogas stove/oven and a gas fridge. The cottage is fully equipped. Full linen and bath towels are provided (but please bring your own swimming towel), as is the first batch of braai wood, candles, tea, coffee and sugar. All you need to bring is your food and refreshments, as the nearest shop is 13km away. In winter you also may wish to bring along extra firewood for the inside fireplace. Alternatively you are welcome to forage for your own on the farm. The cottage doesn't have electricity (nor cellphone reception), but plenty candles and paraffin lamps are provided. There's a long shaded stoep outside with a braai and views of the mountain and aloe garden, which is framed by the original stone kraal wall. An outdoor hotwater shower and bath (splash pool in summer!) can be found to the side of the cottage.

A short stroll past our house and through the lucerne field brings you to the small river (Nelsrivier), where are welcome to take a dip and picnic under the willow trees. The farm offers pleasant strolling and general relaxation, while the Groenfontein valley is built for mountain bikes and long walks, with plenty birdlife on route. There is also a large dam nearby, which offers fishing (including fly-fishing), swimming and braai spots. And, of course, there's Calitzdorp, 13km up the dirt road, with one or two decent restaurants and historic interest, and Oudsthoorn (63km), with its own attractions, including the Cango Caves, ostrich farms, museums and restaurants.

It is such a special place. I cannot do justice to this amazing place on paper. The decor of the cottage is rustic, yet luxurious right down to the detail of items to decent white linen. Everything you need for a relaxed self-catering experience. The view, the outdoor shower/bath, the romantic candlelit evenings, the silence and peace will restore your soul. A place to return to. Ek het 'n wonderlike 2 nagte by die Klipkraal Karoo Cottage oorgebly - en as dit nie vir 'n tekort aan tyd was nie, kon ek nog langer oorgebly het. Die gasvryheid Paul en Renee was oorweldigend. Die Cottage is fantasties toegerus - daar is alles wat 'n mens wil he, maar dit is tog baie subtiel. Die atmosfeer wat geskep is laat 'n mens toe om van alles te vergeet en net vir 'n oomblik "stil in tyd te staan". Ek sal beslis terugkom na hierdie plekkie - dit is 'n ware juweel!
