Jervaux

Description

Located in a bowl in the mountains on the historic Bainskloof pass between Wellington and Worcester, Jervaux is the quintessence of Old Cape charm and tranquillity. Surrounded by pristine Fynbos, with wrap-around views and over 400 meters of unspoiled river, including a large natural swimming pool, the Cape Dutch cottage is the perfect place to relax and enjoy life's simple pleasures.

The property is well situated for a variety of activities, including wine tasting, both in the Breede River valley and over the pass in the Wellington and Paarl area, the property borders the Limietberg nature reserve on one side and vineyards on the other, from the rustic Calabash bush pub up the road to more upmarket options at some of the neighbouring wine estates, or just enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the Cape mountains. There is a large pool in the river for swimming and the water is crystal clear, the entire Kloof upstream is protected reserve. In winter, the surrounding peaks are often snow-covered.

The Cape Dutch cottage has one double bedroom en-suite, and is built in old Cape style with antique furniture. As it is on the far side of the river, access is via boat and a short walk. It has stunning views up the Kloof, and across the Breede river valley wine-lands to Mostert's twin peaks. The cottage is off the grid, water is sourced from a natural rock spring on the property, and there is a solar system for electricity.

Upstream the Wit Rivier flows through the Limietberg Nature Reserve and is unspoiled. Firewood is usually available on site and is free. Ice and cool bags are advised for the cape Dutch cottage and the middle house.

The New Cottage has two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, and is on the near side of the river close to the parking area. It has beautiful views over the vineyards down the the valley. There is normal Eskom supply and water is sourced from a spring on the property.

A beautiful mountain setting. We stayed in the owners private house, which is still under completion,so there are areas of improvement which will hopefully be taken care of(e.g.the bathrooms)before letting out to visitors. A microwave would be nice,as well as more wine glasses, cutting board, dish cloths, braai utensils etc. We did not view the the other three cottages. A huge recent fire has left the whole area prone to ash, though it has opened up parts of overgrown bush;not enoug ... more

Jervaux is a real adventure for the outdoor enthusiast but be warned that it is extremely basic with just the bare minimum of comfort. There will however be plenty of stories to share about your river crossings, candlelight dinners and of course your host Joe! He is such an interesting character who has so much enthusiasm and vigour that you can't help but like him. Our only real gripe was that the house was not very clean on our arrival and a little short on kitchen utensils. On t ... more

Lovely cottage, but quirky. Access to the cottage very challenging in a leaking boat. It would be preferable to have a road to the cottage. Also no fridge, making self-catering tricky.

It was marvellous. The vies, the weather and the dogs loved it too. Take 'flip-flops' for walking on the river stones (even when swimming) and ensure that you have lots of ice and a big cooler box to keep things cold. The owner was an entertaining, fascinating man and this was a pristine nature setting. Will be back!

It was in the most beautiful setting and we loved our time there. Because I knew Joe from nearly 30 years ago when I worked with him as an intern, he gave us a substantial discount - this makes it harder to be critical now and also made the R225 per night more acceptable. Carting all our goods in a wheelbarrow on both sides of the river, no fridge, a very uncomfortable mattress and the fact that the house was not very clean all contributed to it being the sort of place that I would n ... more
