Description

Situated just 20 minutes on the East London side of Grahamstown, half-way between Capetown and Durban, Coombs Lodge is a unique and special bush-camp that can accommodate up to sixteen guests.

The main complex is a stone and thatch bush lodge, with two bedrooms set adjacent to the main Lounge and Living area, connected by thatched walk-ways. Nestled in amongst Eastern Cape valley-bushveld the Lodge teems with a variety of bird species and small game. The core living area has a comfortable lounge and dining-room, an open-plan kitchen, a sheltered braai area and a shaded deck looking onto the Lodge pool.

Accommodation comprises a twin and double room with en suite showers and toilets at the main Lodge, a self-contained Family Cottage, and a Tented Camp sleeping eight, set across two twin sites and one four bed family site. The Cottage and Camp are set privately, adjacent to the main Lodge. Both are separately listed and can be booked independently of the Lodge.

Although primarily self-catering, DIY breakfasts and braai dinners can be provided by special arrangement.

The Lodge is easily accessible to Grahamstown and its schools and University and it is an ideal venue for hosting small special functions and family gatherings.

The family unit comprises two twin sized safari tents set facing each-other, about 2 metres apart, on a timber deck. The childrens' unit is best suited to two single beds, but can accommodate three, together with twin beds in the parent's unit. The site is serviced with electricity and enjoys a private shower and toilet in a canvas-under-thatch unit set adjacent to the tent deck.

To have no cellphone reception or TVs blaring away was the best thing I experience for the past five years on holiday. I stayed in a tent which was wonderfully clean and well serviced. The drive to the main road each morning was like a mini game drive and what a way to start any day? The areas were well equipped and always clean. Highly recommended and I am sure to stay there again.
