Wakkerstroom is well known for its Wetlands and Grasslands Reserves with an abundance of indigenous birdlife and wild flowers.

It is situated in the south western corner of Mpumalanga Province and is surrounded by beautiful mountainous countryside.

The climate is mild in summer with occasional snowfalls in winter. It is only a two-and-a-half to three hours drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, and is a popular thoroughfare to the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, the Itala Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal (+- 2hrs drive away) and Swaziland. It is also on the route between Bloemfontein and Nelspruit, making it an ideal stop-over for tourists travelling from the Cape to the Kruger National Park.

Popular activities in the area include bird-watching, hiking, mountain bike trails, Hang- or Paragliding, 4 x 4 trails and trout fishing.
