Our stay on the island was fantastic, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
There were a couple of issues though:
1)Constant harassment from police while driving in Maputo who demanded bribes on four separate occasions.
2) Paying for things. Given that there are no ATM's on the island, the Marujo beach bar needs to have a facility allowing people to pay their tab with a visa and/or mastercard. On the whole Marujo's was great, but the payment issue was difficult.

Very happy with the trip -
25 September 2007
Stay was excellent. Houses were basic but clean, safe, very good location.
Organization by Andy was done very well and we where very happy with the trip.
One word of caution is that the planes coming back did not leave on time so if you plan to fly back to South Africa from Maputu please leave yourself plenty of time between the flights.

So sun-drenched days on the beach of an idyllic and unspoiled tropical island where you can look out at dolphins, and fishing boats navigate in the distant warm blue waters appeals to you, then book and head straight for Exotic's Inhacazul Lodge which is situated for your pleasure on this tropical island paradise, located in the spectacular Southern region of the Indian Ocean's warm Mozambique coastline, on the exotic island of Inhaca where time and lifestyle is suspended in slow motion…
If your future ideal vacation desire is spending some relaxing and peaceful vacation time together in a lush and tranquil tropical island “getaway” in a real African island lifestyle with its mix of untouched golden sandy beaches, stunning blue sea, mangroves, dazzling coral reefs and great seafood, while staying in refurbished rustic guest accommodation in a clean island environment, then Inhacazul Lodge is your perfect choice...
For water-sports enthusiasts Inhacazul Lodge can also be your ideal island “base-camp” setting for water-sports related activities around the islands such as Diving and Fishing (Game and saltwater fly) and for birders as well!
The island is ideal for yachting visitors that want to have a chance for a stopover to relax a bit and just anchor in a safe and protected location. (Also the ideal tropical island location for film, fashion, underwater or TV/Ad related media productions!!)
Inhacazul Lodge and the island of Inhaca can only be reached by the few visitors that travel across Maputo Bay by booking either a 2-hour ferry trip across the bay or a short 15-minute island flight. These island transfers depart from either Maputo’s main Fishing Harbour or International Airport respectively.
We ask readers to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read all the following in-depth information about the island and lodge that is on this site carefully!! So you fully understand what an island vacation and trip to the island is all about and entails regarding getting to and from the island!
Please read the "Island Transfers" Info as shown in the “Directions to get there” section on the right of this Main site page "Under the Google Map" as we need to make sure you understrand 100% how and when to get to and from the island correctly....!! Andy at Central Reservations (Inhacazul Lodge) WILL HELP YOU with these transfer arrangements as you must be aware of the times and options etc of the island transfers.
Inhaca Island Intro: Exotic's Inhacazul Lodge is positioned on a subtropical island paradise, located in the spectacular Southern region of the Indian Ocean's warm Mozambique coastline, on the exotic island of Inhaca. (“Ilha da Inhaca” in Portuguese)
If your next ideal vacation dream or goal is of spending some relaxing and peaceful vacation time together or in a group in a idyllic tropical island getaway in real African island lifestyle and in simple and rustic guest accommodation and a clean environment, then Inhacazul Lodge is your perfect choice...
Guest Accommodation is very limited at Inhacazul Lodge and we can only accommodate up to a maximum of 56 guests at any one time, and the accommodation units are booked on a “daily-hired” basis, and guests reside in “self-catering” residence units - which comprise of either; “8 sleeper” Chalets (x 4 units) or four “4-6 sleeper” Timber Cabin style guest units… (Unfortunately we do not provide “room” or “bed” type of accommodation only – unless we are very quite or during midweek in our “off-season” periods – its best to check with our Central Reservations office in Durban first!)
We do however provide a “couple-sharing” accommodation option on request if we are not full. The island is also a safe location for children of all ages.
Therefore, Guests can chose to book accommodation based on the mix of your party, in either a larger Chalet unit or a smaller Timber Cabin unit on a daily-basis for as many days/nights as you wish to stay on the island. (Please carefully review the guest unit room “layout plans” and sleeping/bed arrangements that can be reviewed on the left-hand-side of this web-page, [below the pictures] prior to booking a guest unit)… The 8 private guest units are designed mainly for “self-catering” visitors and are fully equipped and serviced daily.
Vacation Options:- Inhacazul Lodge is the ideal tropical "island hide-a-way" for short visits and longer vacations such as: Chill-out weekenders, Honeymoon couples, short Diving Trips or longer island Reef or Wreak expeditions, Saltwater game or fly fishing, Snorkeling Tours, Underwater Hunting Enthusiasts, (Spearo’s) Eco-tours and birding expeditions, and even long island beach trekking expeditions where you can walk for miles over the same beaches as were first stepped upon over 500 years ago by the first Portuguese explorers to this tropical part of Africa….
When to visit: Well due to the all-year round great weather on the Island, trips and vacations almost all year around are very possible but if you want to be more exact in the weather pattern then April to September are the cooler, drier months. Annual rainfall ranges from 400 - 800 mm, falling mainly November to March. December is the wettest month, while August is usually completely dry. Average daily temperatures are around 30C (85F) and it's fairly humid. August to October is the windy months on the island.
Inhaca Island Profile: The 52km² island is situated at 26°S, 33°E, and separates Maputo Bay (Baía de Maputo) to the west from the Indian Ocean off its eastern shores. The island's irregular coastline approaches mainland Machangulo Peninsula at Ponta Torres where a 500 metre-wide land gap and deep tidal race separates the two headlands.
In administrative terms Inhaca is a municipal district of the municipality of Maputo, while the Machangulo peninsula, south of the island is included under the Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area and is part of the district of Matutuíne, Maputo Province.
Small island populations subsist on local island fishing and agriculture. At low tide women harvest crabs, oysters and fish from the islands western shallows. At high tide the men and their small dowl fishing boats leave the island for deep sea fishing in Maputo bay or go out to sea.
Just a few thousand years ago, the island formed part of the continent of Africa. Then changing sea levels and wave action eroded a channel that eventually set Inhaca adrift in the Indian Ocean.
The larger animals like African elephants and hippo’s gradually died out due to lack of food, and today the island’s wildlife consists of the pristine mangroves and reefs and about 300 species of birds.
Geographical features: The island's dimensions are approximately 12km (n-s) by 7km (e-w). The highest point above sea level is the 104m Mount Inhaca on the north-eastern shoreline. The south-western peninsula is known as Ponta Punduine while Ponta Torres to the south-east approaches the mainland.
Two inland swamps occur at the northerly airstrip area and southern Nhaquene respectively. Besides Inhaca, the locals main settlement on the western shore, there are five smaller island native settlements around the island including Inguane, Ridjeni, Nhaquene and Tobia.
Eco-Tourism: Inhaca Island is popular as an ecotourism destination. The island habitat consists of central cultivated fields, grassy northern plains and eastern usnea-covered dune forests. Extensive exposed mudflats fringe the western and southern shores at low tide. Three undamaged coral reefs flank the island's western perimeters, all of which are protected marine reserves. Mangroves cover large sections of the northern shores and southern Saco Bay.
Among 160 coral species are Staghorn and Plate corals. Conspicuous fish are Moray eel, Potato bass, Barracuda and Kingfish. Others present are Brindle bass, Scorpionfish, Butterflyfish, Pufferfish, Parrotfish and Seahorses. Whale sharks and Manta rays visit in summer.
Humpback Whales and Bottlenose dolphins migrate seasonally past these shores. Sea turtles of different species visit the shores in summer to breed.
Inhaca is home to ca 300 bird species, resident and migratory, but suffers from a detrimental House Crow infestation since the 1970's. Bird species of conservation concern are Pink-backed Pelican, Lesser Crested Tern, Crab Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Mongolian Plover, Terek Sandpiper, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Mangrove Kingfisher, Grey-rumped Swallow and Spotted Ground-Thrush. The southerly Nhaquene Swamp and Saco Bay are strongholds of the rare Sooty Falcon. Northerly Portuguese Island is a roost for several Tern species. Special birds of limited distribution are Rudd's Apalis, Neergaard's Sunbird and Pink-throated Twinspot.
Great food, an abundance of sun all year round and a warm inviting sea has made Inhaca a popular destination for International and Southern African visitors in search of a relaxing tropical breakaway.
The island is tiny, but the coastline has much to offer eco tourists and water sports enthusiasts.
There’s great scuba diving and wreck diving, where large game fish, whale sharks, Whales, Manta Rays and brindle bass can be seen.
Inhaca Island is considered by diving experts as one of the worlds truly last “unknown” diving “paradise” locations, with a varied selection of dive sites, reefs and wreaks to visit, so if you are an experienced diver with your own equipment that you can bring with you, then why not join the growing number of fortunate divers now able to experience the stunning underwater world of Inhaca for the first time…!!
The Snorkeling is also excellent and water-skiing, windsurfing, parasailing and angling trips can be enjoyed on the island.
