Nestled in the country, 6 km from the N3, between Durban and Pietermaritzburg you will find a unique guesthouse on a working agro ecological farm. Accommodation is available as a B and B or self-catering basis.

All rooms are en-suite. A major feature of the guesthouse is the dome in the main living area. Here you sit in the lounge with an open fireplace in winter or sit on the stoep overlooking the garden and the farm with a 180-degree view. The bulk of the meals come from the farm, freshly picked and wholesome. This is a working farm so you can experience life amongst the animals or take a stroll in the orchards or orchid houses. Some of the animals include a registered herd of Nguni cattle, endangered Zulu sheep, dogs, old-fashioned poultry and a Spanish Donkey called Gundagunda.

Enaleni Guest Farm has won the SAB 2011 Eat In Award for best South African Heritage Farm. The farm is preserving our heritage by keeping a herd of Nguni cattle, endangered Zulu sheep, growing rare, local maize varietals and the traditional ibhece melon.

Visiting Enaleni is an opportunity to experience an unusual working example of agro-ecological farming. A type of farming that draws from the vibrant heritage of KwaZulu-Natal in an environment that is restful and casual surrounded by abundant agro-diversity.

A true farm experience and so much more. We were touched by Richard and Daves kindness, the freshly baked Easter treats, the farm milk and the way they treat their animals - and their guests. Our 9 year old son learnt so much and was allowed to participate in all the farm activities like milking the cow, Delilah. He followed the farm worker, Banele around for 2 days and loved every minute of it. Everyone was exceptionally kind and could not do enough for us. There is a big variety of farm animals on the farm, not to mention the lovely orchid collection. The guest house is well stocked and firewood is also supplied. We were a family of 5: our parents, ourselves and our son and all of us enjoyed the visit. We felt at home and free to explore the farm, we will definitely visit again.

Had the most fantastic couple of days "on the farm". the cottage is beautiful, quirky and very comfortable. I love the fact that the 2nd bedroom is completely separate, accessed from the verandah. my 4.5 year old daughter was in 7th heaven - a real working farm with the most beautiful and loved animals. Richard was kind enough to let my daughter try milking the cow and to sit her on one of the donkeys. The pigs wander around the farm all day and there were loads of piglets too. The boar (Martin) flops over when you touch him, so you can give him a good scratch! The Nguni cattle are beautiful and very special to get up close to them. Even the ducks are gorgeous and I've never seen such a variety of beautiful chickens and roosters. They also have Zulu sheep and all sorts of other interesting things including the most stunning greenhouse filled with orchids of all types. It really was an education and a treat. Accommodation was comfortable and really beautifully done. We found everything we needed and if we did need something, it was provided quickly and effortlessly. the hosts are wonderful - friendly, helpful and passionate about their farm and animals. We were greeted with a home made date cake and brought yoghurt freshly made from the farm. A part of me wants to keep quiet about this place, keep it to ourselves! But these guys are doing an amazing job in so many ways and deserve to receive the kudos. Next time, we'll spend at least 2 weeks there. thanks for a wonderful couple of days far from the madding crowd.

My daughters and I stopped over on our way back from the coast. It was a delightful find. Apart from the beautiful views, there was so much to learn. The farm is inhabited by indigenous farm animals - and these were beautiful and unusual, from the Inguni to the Zulu sheep and pigs. The orchids were beautiful. David and Richard were very hospitable and the cottage was a delight.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Enaleni Guest Farm. It is tranquil, organic and a hospitable farm experience. I'll be back next month.
