Description

A little off the beaten track with good roads for access, Luphuthana is located on the ocean shore. It is the perfect place for the adventurer. From there the cliffs rise almost all the way to Port St. Johns and the iconic natural attractions of Waterfall Bluff and Cathedral Rock are on your doorstep.

Fishing is amazing, and don't forget your mountain bike for some unforgettable trail riding. Accommodation consists of 12 twin-bedded tented units under thatch. Each Tent is raised off the ground on a platform and has a little balcony. Each unit has an en-suite bathroom with its own hot shower as well as a toilet and a basin. There are lights and a small table and chair in each unit.

There are ample facilities in the lodge including fridge and freezer space, a stainless steel cooler box, cutlery and crockery for 24 people, a three-piece gas stove, two pot basins with hot and cold water, tables and chairs, braai grids in the braai area, and nature guide books and tide charts.

We love the Transkei and Luputhana is enchanting in its off-the-beaten-track setting. There were fireflies in the camp at night and the breaking waves made for lovely photographs. The camp need some TLC. There is one person maintaining it and we think he needs some help. A cleaner for the communal kitchen would make for a more comfortable stay. We stayed for seven nights and also had to empty our own bathroom bins. It was advertised that there would be some drinking water in the form of rainwater, but we discovered that all the water came from the stream next to the camp. This is very dangerous as we were travelling with babies and the camp is extremely remote if someone fell ill and we would need medical care. One of our group was still on his way and bought us some bottled water. One of the adults that did consume the tap water did get a very upset stomach. This is a wonderful place to visit but make sure you come prepared.
