  • Sunsets over the Drakensberg are spectacular.
  • The Barnhouse is used mainly  for Retreat groups (all meals included) or friends and family wanting to get together - either self catering or a dinner, bed and breakfast rate. Being half way between Durban and Johannesburg it is an ideal meeting place.
  • The entire front of the Lodge is glass enclosed making the most of the spectacular view.
  • The living areas are very generous with plenty of comfortable seating and cosy fireplaces.
  • Room 6 is downstairs with a lovely view of sunrise and sunset from the balcony. It has a queen bed, lounge with a fireplace, en-suite bath, double shower, toilet and basin. The balcony leads to a small private indoor garden.
  • The grassed conservatories are fillled with flowers all year round. The also add tremendous warmth to the living areas in winter.

The Drakensberg Mountain Retreat is a stunning destination in the northern Drakensberg. Its spectacular views, wildness, freshness and beauty will captivate you while its deep silence, which can be startling at first, will soon calm you. It has a spectacular setting, high on a ridge overlooking the northern Drakensberg, the Maluti mountains and most of the central Drakensberg. Many have said that the views we have of the Drakensberg are unsurpassed.

A comfortable, cosy haven for those who like old fashioned holidays, with peace and quiet, excellent home cooked food, superb walks and hikes, reading near the fireplace, playing board games and pleasant company. We came here for a one night stay from Pretoria after booking at short notice online. We found the prices excellent value for money. As we didn't have much time here we thoroughly enjoyed the instantly relaxing atmosphere and an unexpected candlelit dinner followed by cups of tea by one of the many woodburners that heat the house downstairs. We even had time to take a short guided hike in the morning down the mountain to see some cave paintings with a spectacular view. We plan on coming back again soon and have already recommended to family and friends.

We stayed here with four friends for three nights and we loved it! It’s a very cosy place, with sitting areas around the fire everywhere. A bit old fashioned maybe, but this just adds up to the atmosphere. Books and games are provided for as well. The honesty bar was very well stocked. The food was great - compliments to the chef! Everybody of the staff was very friendly and helpful. It is possible to ask for a lunch bag to take on your walks. Very convenient! The view is stunning, very nice walks as from the house (ask for a map) and of course in the national park. I really recommend this place to everybody!
