Description
17km en route to the world famous Cango Caves situated in the foothills of the majestic Swartberg Mountains, with breathtaking views of green valleys and hills, a quiet Karoo guest lodge with thatched roofs and natural brick melts into its surroundings.
The lodge is owned and managed by Leon, Rita and Leorita Groenewald and offers the discerning traveler homely and comfortable en suite accommodation. We offer eight en suite rooms, a dining hall and bar, off-road parking near the rooms, a salt-water swimming pool, beautiful natural scenery and an invigorating hiking trail. Each of De Poort’s rooms was named after the wild animals that can be found in the area and every room is decorated individually to enhance the atmosphere of a traditional guest home. By prior arrangement home cooked meals is served South African style and by lamplight. We specialise in delicious ostrich fillets and traditional Karoo lamb. A sustainable, full English breakfast is served everyday to give guest energy for their daily activities.
Come and experience our Klein Karoo hospitality, fresh air, sparkling mountain water and incredible stargazing. We are perfectly situated for bird watching and enjoying the unusual plants and succulents of the Little Karoo. Oudtshoorn is the gem of the Klein Karoo - an ancient rolling plain between the Outeniqua and Swartberg mountains. The town is enclosed on either side by mountains, which means that every road into the area is a pass. This affords the traveler with breathtaking scenes of unspoiled nature.
Oudtshoorn is also a tourist hotspot; en route to De Poort Country Lodge on the R328 you will have the opportunity to visit Cango Wildlife Ranch, Cango Ostrich farm, Rust & Vrede waterfall, Wilgewandel and of course the world famous Cango Caves.
Take the Swartberg mountain pass to Prins Albert and Gamkaskloof (De Hel) and do the round trip through Meiringspoort and De Rust. Drive one of the many gravel back roads with amazing mountain and nature views. In Oudtshoorn itself visit a number of curio shops, historic ostrich palaces, the C.P. Nel museum, C.J. Langenhoven's house and the suspension bridge spanning the Grobelaars River. There are also a number of wine farms in the area.
