We have been self driving for 5 weeks all around SA and stayed mostly in Guesthouses. Chapman's has been over all one of most satisfying. It was just sort of isolated accommodation we were looking for and a good introduction to South Africa. While keeping up with reasonable rates, hard working and good humoured owner Ross gave us a warm welcome and manage to provide amenities generally found in more expensive lodges. We occupied one of two small and well appointed chalets on hill overlooking reserve, from which we had panoramic view from balcony and seen many animals while sipping wine at twilight. Short dirt road from main house and restaurant to chalet may not be fit for fancy sport cars, but we had no problem getting there with compact car. Other accommodations stand close to main lodge. Cellular phone is a must to call once you reach the locked gate on the dirt road leading in. We had one of best breakfast ever with huge and tasty ommelette and sausage in beautiful thatched roof restaurant in main lodge. Ross then offered to show us around reserve in his big overland vehicule. He drove us happily at slow pace which allowed us to view and photograph at close range most of the many roaming animals. We didn't see as many species anywhere else until we made it to Kruger. Only regret is reserve is so large that Ross could never track down the two newly released giraffes.

Room was clean, comfortable bed. Too close to the main house though and it would have been more convenient if the shower/toilet/basin were separate and not in the room itself.

I cannot understand the glowing reviews of previous guests. Perhaps the "Lodge" has changed hands. We arrived, up the dirt road, a fair distance from town to be told there was no bar and no alcohol available. Not a concern if you know, but if you don't it is a long way from town. The first room we were offered was next to the kitchen and smelt like it was in the kitchen, strange when "dinner" that evening was fried chicken legs (probably from KFC) with rice and some spinach and salad. The amount of food was insufficient for the guests, a situation made worse when the owner also ate from what was available. The other guests were offered bread and jam, no one spoke to us. No starter or sweet was available.
The room we eventually stayed in was up the hill, only accessible by 4x4. The roof was loose and banged all night in the wind keeping us awake. No notice was taken of our choice for breakfast, we specifically asked for cheese to be excluded, but were served cheese grillers and cheese on toast. There was no supervision in the dinning area, and the food preparation methods were unhygienic to say the least. No mention of game drives either. Avoid this establishment.
Chapman Safaris strives to make each clients stay with us as comfortable and pleasurable as possible. We do our utmost best to attend to the specific needs of our valued customers. However, the reality as we all know, is that this is not always possible, especially considering the wonderfully diverse clientele we cater for.
The review of a recent guest Steve Eden, is unfortunate. We do however trust that our future clients and regular guests will have a pleasurable experience as have the majority of our previous guests, which is strongly confirmed by all the fantastic positive reviews left on this site and others.
We only regret to have to respond to these allegations in this manner, and would have dealt with the grievances with the greatest of pleasure had we had the opportunity to do so personally. Unfortunately none of the grievances were brought to our attention by the client during their stay ,thus we were unable to see to the complaints.
One of these complaints was that the were not taken on a game drive. We would like to clarify that game drives are given on request, given that the owner has the time to do so, drives are booked in advanced and that the additional fee charged is paid for. It is not a fixed entertainment included in the accommodation price. The Guest House and the Game Farm are two separate entities.
Regarding the comment of there not being sufficient food for the guests, we at Chapman Safaris can say with pride that we make use of caterers to provide for our guests evening meals. Their food always has been exceptional and we have never had a complaint about quality or the quantity of the food. The only meals made in our kitchens (which is open plan and in full view of clients) to start with is breakfast, so that it is enjoyed warm and at a time convenient to guests. We can confidently say that our guests are provided with sufficient, good quality meals. The persons that were referred to as having had to eat bread and jam were given on request of the guests themselves, as it is what they fancied at that moment. Yes, the owner does occasionally eat with and socialize with guests- it is how we have built our friendly reputation being able to do so and is welcomed by guests.
The matter of the roof is unfortunately true, wear and tear of buildings do happen. It was only brought to the attention of the owner a week later, and the matter was dealt with immediately.
As far as the lack of supervision in the dining hall, our guests enjoy their privacy and we grant them this. However, steps will be taken to ensure that there is a permanent presence when clients are in the dining hall to avoid a grievance such as this one.
We at Chapman Safaris are always open to grievances and critism as it helps us grow and cater for wrongs on our part. It can only help our service and business improve. We do apologize for any inconveniences during your stay Steve Eden and as previously said, it is unfortunate that you as client did not discuss any of these matters during your stay. Negative reviews do reflect badly on our good name. We are grateful for this opportunity to set the record straight. We trust that it will not have a negative impact on guests who have not yet stayed here, and do so confidently based on the fact that we have fantastic reviews, passionate staff, a beautiful setting and a long standing business name.
As the owner of Chapman Safaris I guarantee the best possible service and encourage you to please inform us should anything not be in your taste during your stay with us.

Clean and comfortable accommodation away from main road on game farm. We had room 2 which is unfortunately not sound proof and we could hear noises coming from kitchen clearly. Owner and staff friendly.
