Description

Carnarvon Hotel is a family-owned establishment located in the heart of the Karoo. Situated near the centre of Carnarvon, the hotel offers travellers 12 en-suite bedrooms furnished with double or twin beds. Each room is equipped with a TV and is air-conditioned to keep guests cool on hot summer days.

The hotel also features a large hall where functions and meetings can be held. Breakfast, and cooked meals on request only, can be enjoyed in the dining room. A barbecue room is adjacent to the famous Blikkiesbar and dining room, and meat and wood is available on request. Parking is also provided. The Blikkiesbar is famous for its large range of beer cans decorating the bar as well as the barbecue area. It also contains a jukebox and guests will leave with fond memories.

The town itself is rich with cultural history, as displayed in the local museum, the adjacent Corbelled House, and the old Fort - the only one in the region - constructed on Carnarvon Koppie, which also offers beautiful views of the town. A Tortoise Reserve is located on a farm and is home to 60 Mountain tortoises, with some responding to their name and will come for a titbit when called.

The Information Centre is within walking distance and provides more sites and activities in the area. Carnarvon also serves as the home of MeerKAT, a radio telescope under construction in the Northern Cape in the bid to host the Square Kilometre Array telescope against Australia.
