Camp Gecko Private Nature Reserve & Tented Camp

Very beautiful place, owners very friendly, very laid back place very relaxing, very affordable.

We spent 2 nights @ Camp Gecko and had a great time. The place is nice, in the heart of nature & the owner is friendly.

Our experience would have been very different if it had been in the summertime, definately not for mid-year use. We arrived in the dark and it was freezing (July '12). The tents are situated far apart, and we were three families, so it was a 'schlep' with food prep. The bedding provided is minimal and it was really cold. The open-air bathrooms in the summer would be fantastic but NOT for winter and my shower dried up whilst still showering with shampoo on my head, in the dark @ 5.30am! My husband had to jump in the bakkie and wake up the farm staff to help. About an hour later, the problem was sorted. The sleeper couch in the one tent was broken and no bedding provided. There was too little wood provided for the donkey heating system. Two of the tented camps did not have wash-up facilities, and that also made it difficult. I had requested cutlery prior to us booking in but still had to go and fetch it at reception after unpacking and realising there was none. We were then given a blue crate with a pan, tin plates and cups and a bag dumped full of cutlery. We are regular campers but had chosen to travel light this holiday and opt for self catering units, even if it was a tent. I found the accommodation to be minimalistic and I will in future check on what self catering entails.

The tented camp is a bit run down. Fab setting. Too bad.

We stayed in the Porcupine Camp and it was one of the most memorable accommodation establishments we had during our tour of Namibia. Camp Gecko is a must for the adventurous traveller. 10 out of 10!
