A warm welcome awaits by the old wagon route. In 1919 the Cottage was built on the banks of the Klein River on the 5th generation De Wet family farm, Goudini. Recently it has been given a kiss of new life as a guest cottage.
Care has been taken with the restoration to maintain the special ambiance by keeping the thick mud walls, yellow wood doors, bamboo ceilings and large family hearth intact.
The living area is an inviting sitting room with the original open hearth fireplace. Rocking chairs and a deep soft sleeper couch invites you to just relax, listen to the birds or the wind whispering in the treetops. Double doors open on a wide veranda overlooking the river and fields beyond.
A fully equipped kitchen with original laboratory basin, cast in 1923 makes this a fully self-catering experience to offer our guests complete privacy. Bring your food along or talk to us about a handy starter pack before meandering to the quant towns close by to sample and pick-up local produce. We can also arrange a home cooked traditional South African fair, firewood for the fireplace and braai/bbq or picnic baskets with carefully selected and top quality produce from the area. (we will ask you upon making the booking).
The cottage contains a fridge, freezer, microwave and small oven so no excuse to not eat like a farmer! You will also find a CD player/Radio, a small library for reading info on a variety of local and South African topics, but no TV.
There are two bedrooms of which the main faces the river and forest beyond and boasts an antique oak double bed whilst the second bedroom is fitted with antique iron twin beds and overlooks the meadows and hills of the valley. Don’t be surprised when you see a little lamb outside the window! All beds have luxury mattresses. A full bathroom tastefully designed in white with bath and shower serves both rooms.
Little luxuries such as crisp white percale linen, white cotton towels, flowing mosquito nets and even croc loafers for most sizes to use. Puti and Dianne took their time to complete and choose all finishing of the cottage, all antique furniture is from the farm and has been hand made, much of the soft finishing such as curtains dating back from previous generations.
Activities:
Be part of a working sheep farm or partake in activities such as bird watching, biking, walking, canoeing, picnics, fishing for bass, braai / bbq, whale watching or socializing at Hermanus, swimming at many of the stunning beaches or lunchtime drives to the quaint towns of Stanford, Napier and Greyton.
While 2 vibrant De Wet generations tend the sheep and plant the wheat, we proudly invite you as our guests on a farm tour to over 630 hectares or walk and bike freely on the routes laid out to appreciate the birdlife and remaining Renosterveld fynbos.
For most of the year there is enough water in the river for canoeing and when in flood, even white water kayaking is possible! Spinning for Black bass promises to clear your mind of all worries. Your kids will never forget skipping through the blue gum forest island, picking up moss and leaves or building hides under their fallen trunks. Pack a picnic basket for a leisurely lunch under the trees on the river banks and watch the kids swim on tractor tire tubes, building swings and playing with mud cakes or braai / BBQ in the huge fireplace with all the comforts close at hand.
no worries... Once you arrive at the beach house or on the farm drop your worries, kick off your high heels — you are now of the Overberg!
