Avala Cottage

This is the former home of Dennis and Estelle who now run a B&B in Gordon's Bay, some 2 or more hours away. It displays all the characteristics of a second home rather than a professionally equipped holiday unit. It lacks matching cutlery, crockery and linen. Some of the owners' personal items remain in drawers and cupboards. There is a very limited DSTv suite without sport or M-Net and the entire building is constructed from ceiling board, which, together with the creaky wooden floors, makes every sound audible throughout the unit. There were a few maintenance issues raised - a leaking shower, DVD player not connected and bedside lighting issues. The distance from the owners led to our having to resolve those we could ourselves for which we were reimbursed, while others remained unresolved. L'Agulhas is exposed to both SE and NW winds and so we found that, apart from the famous lighthouse, the excellent fish served at L'Aghulhas Seafoods and the interesting wine shop, our daily excursions were further afield into the surrounding area and took us to Struisbaai, Elim, Bredasdorp, Stanford and Hermanus. Given all of this, we think there is better value than Avala elsewhere in the area and we would probably seek other options on any return to the area.
