Description
Auret’s Cottage is situated opposite the child-friendly St James tidal pool and beach huts and offers comfortable accommodation on the Muizenberg, Kalk Bay historical mile. Steeped in history, the cottage was built by local personality and fisherman Abraham Auret circa 1853, and is one of the oldest buildings on this breath-taking stretch of Cape Town’s South Peninsula coast. Set in a lavender-scented garden, the cottage retains many of its original features like wide walls, sash windows and wooden floors.
The cottage is a wonderful base from which to explore the area on foot: Wander across the road to the tidal pool and swim or watch the children paddling in the water. Take a stroll across to Danger Beach and watch the surfers. You can always expect to see a seal or two, and between July and November you can whale watch. Enjoy a meal at the restaurants next door or opposite or it’s a scenic ten minute walk to the eclectic mix of restaurants, antique shops and art galleries of Kalk Bay.
Take the walk way along the sea front to Muizenberg and take in the history of the area. Catch the restaurant train carriage along the coast to Simons Town. The more adventurous can walk up the steps to the mountain and enjoy the scenery from the contour paths or explore the local caves.
The cottage has a large living/ dining/ kitchen area. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering. It sleeps five in three bedrooms, one large bedroom with a double bed and two small bedrooms, one with a double and one with a single bed. There is an additional single bed on the enclosed porch. There is satellite TV and a DVD recorder.
Children are very welcome and we can provide a stroller, high chair, camping cot and children’s beach toys and books. Little ones especially love the tidal pool and when they are tired, you can just carry them across for a bath and a nap.
The cottage is self-catering but there is a restaurant next door and another opposite, and many to choose from in nearby Kalk Bay. In high season, the cottage next door is also available as a vacation rental. There is secure off-street parking for guests.
