Gansbaai

Description

Escape from the world for a while in this peaceful, ambient little town offering some of the world's best whale watching and by far the world's best great white shark diving.

Enjoy beautiful mountain walks and trails through some of the Cape's best-conserved fynbos. Walk up The lighthouse at Danger Point and gaze out over the endless ocean views and the remains of the famous HMS Birkenhead wreck.

Gansbaai is an area of great contrast, with a number of small bays and miles of untouched sandy beaches. There are two harbours, nature reserves with over 1500 species of Fynbos, ancient Milkwood forests, rocky inlets, caves and spectacular views across Walker Bay.

Baardskeerdersbos offers one the opportunity to experience the ambience of old fashioned farm life. Relaxation, stillness and onesness with nature brings a sense of inner calm to visitors time and again.

Join the locals as they celebrate Easter with a Crayfish Festival every year. Abalone (perlemoen) is also professionally farmed in the Danger Point area. There are some famous fishing spots and the restaurants serve a number of seafood delights.

The Gansbaai Festival takes place annually in July in the Gansbaai harbour and the Winter Fynbos (wild flower) show is a great attraction not to be missed.

This is a great place for a few days breakaway. There are a lot of things to do and see in and around the area. We were there for four nights and did a lot, such as sightseeing, fynbos walks, whale watching, boat trips and visiting nearby towns. There are just not enough restaurants to choose from.

Very safe, quiet, scenic, private, historic.

Gansbaai is much better than Hermanus, really! Just find the little bay on the end of Guthrie Street in De Kelders.
