Luangwa Bush Camping is walking with the best of uides, dipping deeper into the bush from the fixed tents, by camping out for a couple of nights and enjoying dinner and stories around the fire.

The itinerary for this bush camp is staying at Nkwali Camp for two nights, then by Tena Tena for one night, then at Luangwa Bush Camp for two nights, and then finally at Nsefu Camp for two nights.

There are two walk-in Meru tents for a maximum of four guests with mattresses on the ground, sheets and blankets, wash basins, a shared bucket shower, a bush loo/long drop, a full bar and food services.

Nkwali is ideally situated for the start of your safari, the six rooms all look out over the river and have open-air bathrooms. Depending on your arrival time in the day, you will enjoy a lunch looking out over the lagoon to the back of Nkwali, or if in the afternoon a night game drive.

When staying at Tena Tena and Nsefu, you can walk between the two camps for two or three days, camping on the way. This is simple camping but with that extra touch of comfort. The walking is in one of the most lagoon rich areas of the Luangwa, hence the game is superb.

Cassin’s Bush Camp is a rustic self-catering camp situated on the banks of the West Lunga River, approximately 2 km upstream of the Luakera River confluence and 15 km south of the DRC border, on the 15,000-hectare Nkwaji Wildlife Game Ranch.

The bush camp derives its name from the normally elusive cassin’s grey flycatcher, who has been a welcome resident and can be seen flying up and down the river daily. The pristine surrounds of the West Lunga River are fringed with Mushitu, palms, orchids and grassy dambo’s, and the bird variety is reflected by this changing habitat.

The camp consists of four double classic safari tents and one family tent, with rustic en-suite bathrooms that each feature flushing toilets, showers and hand basins. The tented dining area, with fly-screen doors, includes a large dining area. Outside, next to the veranda, is an al fresco bar counter with a sink.

The camp and its surrounds are an absolute birder's paradise, and day trips can be enjoyed in the area. Here, in the most north-west corner of Zambia, Mwinilunga and its surrounds has some extensive Miombo areas, but some parts are heavily settled. The Nkwaji Forests in contrast are totally uncut and pristine. Between the two areas there is an exciting array of birds to be seen.

Chamilandu Bushcamp is a beautiful camp on one of the South Luangwa’s prime river locations. It is perfect for a bird's-eye view of the wildlife that the river and its lagoons attract. You don’t need to leave your bed to see the wildlife, as from your unique vantage point you can watch as animals roam across the landscape, or swing through the trees above your head.

There are three Stilted Chalets at this exclusive camp which is set on the riverbank beneath a soaring ebony grove. Each has its own raised verandah to loll on during the heat of the day, and an open-fronted en-suite bathroom with the same views over the tranquil waters. Two of the chalets have queen-size beds and one has a king-size bed. With capacity for just six guests, this is the ideal camp for small groups.

Enjoy a sundowner from the comfort of the thatched bar and dining area as you watch the wildlife do the same at the river. Exceptional game viewing and understated elegance make Chamilandu Bushcamp a place to remember.

There are walking safaris and game drives to explore the impressive range of habitats in the area. With no fewer than seven oxbow lagoons behind the camp, there are always thirsty animals around seeking refreshment. Our hide looks out over one of these lagoons and is the perfect place to take lunch, tea or to while away an afternoon in a hammock to the soundtrack of bathing elephant.

Kakuli is a seasonal bush camp on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. For many it marks the end of a walking safari from camp to camp following the course of the Luwi River. Whether Kakuli is used as a stopover in the middle of a walking trail or as a base for a more static wildlife safari, the game viewing and night drive safaris in this area are some of the best in Zambia.

There are four spacious, traditional safari tents under shady thatched roofs, each with an open-air bathroom. All of the tents overlook the river with stunning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of the Luangwa. A lovely thatched chitenje acts as the centre of camp. It is on a wooden deck overlooking the grazing lawn that leads down to the two rivers and is a perfect spot in which to relax and watch the river and the wildlife meander by.

Guests are able to decide each day if they want to venture out on foot or with the vehicle. Most evenings however, you will want to explore the area after dark. This stretch of the Luangwa is fantastic for wildlife. It is bustling with predators and the best time to see them in action is during those first few hours of darkness. Night drive safaris from Kakuli have been known to provide guests with some of the most exciting game viewing in Zambia. It is certain that your wildlife safari at Kakuli will be one to remember.

Kakuli is one of the few Zambian bushcamps to open in February and March. At this time of year the river is high, we gain access by boat and activities are either on the river or on foot in the drier, sandy areas that surround camp.

Two of the tents have queen-size beds while the other two have king-size beds.

Our expert guides will lead you on foot through some of the park’s most untouched wilderness, where large herds of buffalo roam the grassy plains and thirsty elephants come to drink at the springs and along the river. With limited roads in the area, activities are focused around walking, but to get even further afield, day and night game drives are also on offer. In the evening after wading through the river, we invite you to join your hosts for sundowners or sit around the campfire for a drink before recounting the day’s adventures over a starlit dinner.

Mfuwe Lodge is a safari lodge set in the most prolific game area of the South Luangwa. The perfect place to enjoy excellent game viewing and recharge your batteries. Set inside the park, just five minutes’ drive from the main gate, the lodge’s allure is instantly obvious. This region of the park is renowned for its prolific game such as giraffe, buffalo, antelope and crocodile which are constant visitors to Mfuwe Lodge’s lagoon, whilst in November the local elephants regularly wander right through the lobby. Whether you stay overnight, or just have lunch en route to a bush camp, Mfuwe Lodge’s relaxed charm and enviable surroundings make it the perfect stopover. Mfuwe Lodge also offers you the chance to relax at its Bush Spa or buy a few mementos of your time in Zambia at our curio shop.

Secluded covered verandahs look out over wallowing hippo’s and thirsty game in the lagoons, while the newly refurbished African interiors are the perfect place to wind down with their comfortable sitting rooms and en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers.

Walking safaris can be arranged on request, but the majority of outings are game drives, allowing guests to explore as much of this prolific region of the Luangwa Valley as possible. Drives are led by our experienced team of guides, setting out at first light, and then again in the late afternoon when the wildlife is at its most active. After sundowners, spotlights are used to pick out a new cast of nocturnal creatures.

Mayukuyuku Camp is one of those places that just feels right. The camp is located on the southern edge of the Northern Sector of Kafue National Park, just 8 km from the Mongu road, giving it year-round access.

The guestbook is brimming with sightings, especially lions and leopards, with regular views of wild dog too, and excellent birding.

Luwi Bush Camp is a seasonal bush camp that is open from 20 May to 31 October. It is nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon. It is situated deep in the heart of the national park and is one of the only Luangwa safari camps to be positioned well away from the permanent waters and rich vegetation of the main river.

Due to its remote location there are not many roads in the area so activities are centred on walking safaris. This fact makes Luwi Bush Camp one of the most enthralling camps in Zambia. The wildlife in the area is prolific and to track it each day on foot is a memory that will last a lifetime. Luwi was one of the South Luangwa National Park's first remote safari camps. Norman Carr sited the camp back in the 1980's and today this camp offers guests a true walking safari and a taste of the traditional African bush experience.

Accommodation is in four huts that are made of grass and thatch with polished mud floors. Each room is designed differently utilizing trees and natural vegetation wherever possible. The design of these rooms lends the camp a rustic appeal and provides a truly African bush experience. A small thatch provides shade over the bar area and daytime meals are served in the shade of the trees whilst dinner is taken under the stars accompanied by the many sounds of the Zambian night.

There is a large lagoon adjacent to the camp that teams with hippo and crocodile. This permanent water source attracts wildlife from far and wide. With the emphasis on the use of natural materials in its construction, this camp is certainly one of the most traditional of all of the Luangwa safari camps. Typically your day will start early, around the camp fire when you will discuss the noises and animals heard through the night. Your morning walking safari is likely to take three to four hours returning you to camp in time for a hearty brunch.
