In recent times, the most exciting development in the Lake Gariep region has been the renaissance of Bethulie's famous Royal Hotel. Founded in the 1880s, the Royal Hotel combines all that's best in traditional South African hospitality, with a keen understanding of modern needs. It's currently benefiting from a far-reaching makeover which has reinforced its reputation as 'the hotel that's better than home.'

Bethulie is located just 90 minutes south of Bloemfontein in South Africa's Free State. It is six hours' drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, fivehours from Port Elizabeth and East London, eight hours from Durban and nine hours from Cape Town. That makes it the ideal accommodation stopover between South Africa's major cities; however it's also a worthwhile destination in its own right.

En-suite convenience and enterprising cuisine, access to a huge private library and record collection, service standards modelled on an ocean liner's, a burgeoning 'Hall of Fame' honouring the town's best and bravest, Bethulie's Royal Hotel is an experience to savour and treasure. It's also the perfect base for exploration of South Africa's little-known hinterland and its neighbour, Lesotho.

Accommodation at Bethulie's Royal Hotel ranges from tourist to first-class, and tariffs are calculated with an eye to value. Shops are located close by and secure parking, even for large vehicles, is available. The Royal Hotel welcomes well-behaved children and also makes special provision for pets, the physically challenged, and tour groups whether big or small.

The longest road and rail bridge in Africa, a clutch of well-stocked game reserves and the scenic splendour of Lake Gariep, site of the most infamous concentration camp of the Anglo-Boer War, the childhood haunts of actor Patrick Mynhardt, who won fame as the 'Boy from Bethulie'; these are just a few of the points of interest that give Bethulie its broad-based appeal.

The town retains a frontier feeling that conjures echoes of days long gone. For generations, its chief role has been to serve the needs of hard-working sheep farmers and their families in the surrounding district, but in addition Bethulie prides itself on being a safe, friendly and peaceful oasis, offering attractions and diversions that excite discerning visitors from all over the world.

Springfontein House has been graded a 3 Star guesthouse by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. The establishment is also top rated as ‘Superior’ by the AA Travel Guide, is featured in the Greenwood Guide as well as the Portfolio Collection.

Springfontein House is very conveniently situated on the outskirts of the little village and thus it is quiet and surrounded by fields. Throughout the house, there is an extensive collection of objet d’art, as well as South African and European paintings. The guesthouse has been completely renovated, and the garden has been subject to a comprehensive replanting programme. A swimming pool has been built, which guests find a welcome relief after a long and hot journey. In winter, guests can relax in the warm sitting room, or go for a brisk walk before enjoying a delicious dinner.

Through glass doors is a sunroom with slate floors, and an incarnadine dining room. Enjoy Georgian tables and silver candelabras. In the bedrooms, the curtains are silk, the towels soft and the comfortable beds have crisp linen, plump pillows and mohair throws. Outside, white walls dazzle brightly and creepers climb above the stoep. There is a brick patio and colourful flowerbeds, a pool and a series of fishponds. All rooms have an en suite bath or shower and a television. Dinner at R150 per person.

The Garlic House is a farm-like place for guests to come and share in this wonderful oasis in the heart of the southern Free State. The property is a peaceful and quiet place to stay and the organic garden, where a copious amount of garlic is grown, is a ramble of self-seeding plant heaven. Dinners with seasonal garden produce can be requested on the day of arrival, otherwise there are good restaurants in town.

The Bluegum Cottage is the accommodation wing of the Garlic House and, as the name suggests, is shaded by the 120 year old bluegum tree. The guest unit looks out over a vast farm-like garden with hardly a light to be seen at night and not being on a main road assures very little sounds of traffic can be heard.
Being the only guests assures one of a peaceful and private stay. In summer guests can cool off in the little dip-pool. In winter guests can sit in front of the large fireplace in the lounge and keep warm.

The furnishings are simple yet comfortable; being a combination of antique and modern. The burglar bars are custom-made and designed by Kitty Schneider, reflecting cats, birds and other bits of nature. Although security is luckily not a top priority in this small town; crime being very minimal.

Whatever your needs, whether an overnight family, a honeymoon couple looking for a romantic and private setting or an artist looking for that undisturbed yet inspiring place to work, we will do our best to give you all you need to make your stay as comfortable a possible.

Hakuna Matata means “no worries” and this is what we strive for our guests to feel when they arrive at our much-loved guest house in Koffiefontein.

A unique and stylish African theme décor welcomes guests with accommodation that is comfortable, colourful and creative; a flair that runs throughout the establishment. A restaurant provides three delicious and affordable meals a day and service provided is friendly.

Home in the little mining town of Koffiefontein, it may not be the biggest town you will ever visit but it is an area with a rich history. Not only was Koffiefontein the place where some notable figures from Afrikaner history was interned before the Second World War but it was also the home of one of the great authors of Afrikaans literature, Etienne Le Roux.
