This wonderful, relatively new restaurant is situated a stone's throw from the beach in Strand and is the ideal hangout for long, lazy lunches and beautiful dinners. The menu is refreshing and creative with dishes like gourmet baguettes, original, gourmet pizzas and the favourite sharing food - sushi. Try the bitterballen as a starter, five traditional round Dutch croquettes served with mustard, or a lovely picnic basket for two filled with a French baguette, garlic gamba’s, Italian cold meat cuts, brie and gorgonzola, fig preserve, fruit, marinated olives, salad, Amsterdammertjes, sparkling wine or Ega Rooibos tea. This should be ordered two hours in advance. The pizzas are truly unique and the breakfast pizza with free range eggs and bacon topped with Parmigiano Reggiano is a must-try. A wide variety of coffees, teas, wines, dessert wines and sparkling wines are available. As Carolina says: 'Buon appetito, Lekker eet, Enjoy, Bon appétit, Eet smakelijk, Selamat makan, Born up a tree!'

Dipped Confections is owner-run and -managed and the passion and love that is put into everything, from the interior to the service to the food, is clearly evident. A breakfast, lunch and 'sweet' menu is offered. Start your day with a decadent flapjack stack with bacon, caramelized banana and maple syrup, or a delightful omelette with roasted tomatoes, mushroom, cheddar and bacon bits. Lunch offers traditional South African meals cooked the 'homemade' way. The bobotie and lamb pie are just two examples. The Dipped Homemade Burger proves to be popular and comprises a 100% beef patty, onion marmelade, fresh tomatoes and lettuce and is served with baked potato wedges. A person can go on and on about the food, but there is also a great beverage list on offer. Wines, sparkling wines, beers, ciders and the old favourite, the Dom Pedro, are available. The name implies sweetness and freshly baked cakes, scones, muffins and pastries are specialities. Baked by order cakes can also be arranged and promises to deliver a special flair to that wedding, birthday party or in fact any special occasion. Add homemade nougat, marshmallows, jams, spreads, biscuits, rusks, and chocolate and you will mimic a kid in a candy store. This little gem is worth a visit. The restaurant is open from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am until 5 pm and on Saturdays from 8:30 am until 3 pm.

And then there is food: hearty, comforting and exciting. Expect traditional fare that has been reinvented with flair. The menu changes daily to make the most of the fresh seasonal produce. Menu items include homemade Springbok sausage with chilli jelly and Warthog loin with mustard seed onion gravy with cabbage and samp. A firm, delectable favourite remains the white mold cheese and figs stuffed with walnuts, poached in red wine with citron. The restaurant does not sell wine, but visitors are invited to bring their own. Guests are encouraged to walk into the kitchen and check out what’s cooking. Alternatively, sit back and take it all in: the delightful smells from the stove, the clatter of pots and the chatter from the parrot – just like at aunty’s house.
