ChefAlma@Groenvlei Restaurant is situated in beautiful Lake Pleasant Resort just outside Sedgefield in the heart of the Garden Route, South Africa. The restaurant serves laid-back rustic food with a clean modern twist, and beautifully presented with care. The menu changes periodically and will always include local seasonal produce, own homegrown herbs, vegetables and sprouts. Try some of the decadent desserts and cakes. The resort is in a natural bird sanctuary on the shores of tranquil Groenvlei, the only freshwater lake on the Garden Route. The lake beachfront, with its sandy beach and lawns, is particularly safe for young children. On the eastern boundary of the resort is the 2000 hectare Goukamma Nature Reserve. Currently we are serving breakfast from 8:00 to 12:00, lunch from 12:00 to 17:00, and dinner from 17:00 to 21:00. We are closed on Sunday evenings and Mondays.

This beautifully renovated building was originally a shed on De Melkbosch farm in the 1700's. The water from a fountain nearby used to form a dam next to the shed, hence the name 'Damhuis' (dam house). Where this dam once lay, the bustling Beach Road is now winding. This restaurant offers seating inside and outside, but it is outside in the courtyard where you want to be, weather permitting. Beautiful, uninterrupted views of the beach and the vast Atlantic greet you as you start your day with one of the delicious breakfasts. Try a small, medium or large English breakfast, a delicious omelette, a continental breakfast or even a 'slimmer's' breakfast. The dishes are all freshly prepared with lots of care and attention to detail. Gorgeous tapas can also be enjoyed with a glass or three of wine on a laxzy sunny afternoon. The menu is quite extensive and some of the starter dishes are mussels steamed in a white wine sauce served with freshly baked bread, tender tubes of calamari and peri peri chicken livers. For a main, try one any one of the seafood, chicken or meat dishes. From the catch of the day and paprika prawns to a chicken curry and the 'Cock of all Chicken Pies'. A range of succulent steaks, lamb dishes, proudly South African tripe and bobotie and even a humungous burger option leaves diners spoilt for choice. The Damhuis combines beautiful views, great food, and a location not easily matched to create a winning recipe.

Food enthusiasts will not be disappointed with the fine dining experience on offer here. The restaurant offers set menus to choose from, ensuring orchestrated flavours and textures above all else. Guests can opt for two, three or four courses, all with or without specific wine pairings to compliment the dishes. Although the menu is changeable to in order to really get the best out of seasonal produce, one can expect to be tantalized with The duck liver parfait to start. The mains are exciting, with the likes of Penny Verburg’s Suckling Pig Roasted and a lavish baked pudding with Pimm’s Creme Catalan. The wine list is not limited to only Jordan’s Wines, but also has a good local selection and a broad spectrum price range. One is permitted to bring one’s own wine (limited to a single bottle) subject to a corkage fee. The restaurant is open for lunch Wednesdays to Sundays and for dinner Thursdays and Fridays.
