Mac Mac Forest Retreat is centrally situated between Sabie, 15 km away from Mac Mac, Graskop and Pilgrim's Rest, in the picturesque Mpumalanga Escarpment area. The resort used to be a forestry station, but in 1999 Coen and Sonja Vermaak took over Mac Mac and started renting out the self-catering forestry houses.

The view of Mauchberg, the tranquil atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, and a central base to explore the popular escarpment area and Kruger National Park became known with time. The accommodation became more and more popular, and Mac Mac Forest Retreat underwent constant upgrading. A cosy and intimate bar was added, a swimming pool was put in, and some activities were added.

The self-catering houses feature a kitchen with cutlery, crockery, stove, fridge, an indoor fireplace, and outdoor barbecue facilities. Bedding is supplied, however guests will have to supply their own towels. The houses do not have TVs inside, but there is a warm, cosy pub on the premises equipped with DStv.

Terra Rouge is a Kalahari sheep farm operated by the owners, only 45 km from the Kgalagadi National Park’s Namibian border post, Mata Mata, and one km from the main road and the C15. We are situated in a very quiet and natural area.

The farm only has three bungalows and a campsite. The bungalows are all private, but not too far from the main house. The campsite is one km from the main house on the banks of the dry Auob river, covered by huge camel thorn trees. Guests are free to walk wherever they like and we also have a high dune close to the accommodation which is perfect for sun downers.

We have a meerkat family living close to our house and they can be seen in the mornings and late afternoons as they move around freely. There is a duiker who made the front of one of the bungalows his home, he’s been here for two years, and we have other unexpected bird life and wildlife in the riverbed.

We sell wood and meat, mostly organic lamb chops, for barbecues. The owner can do a side dish or bake fresh bread by prior arrangement. A take away dinner can be organised for guests to enjoy in the privacy of their bungalow, outside on the veranda, or on a dune. Breakfast picnic baskets can also be ordered. Please let me know well in advance if we need to get fresh supplies as we are far from a town and we have children in the school that we sometimes have to attend to.

This is a place where nature does all the entertaining; beautiful, a little wild, natural and peaceful. Our retreat-styled eco lodge nestles on the forest edge and abounds with creativity.

You can choose to stay in little woodcutter cottages that were once stables for our friendly horses or in a spacious converted barn, ideal for family gatherings and retreats, plus a quaint double-storey cottage among a glade of trees that oozes magical charm.

For the more adventurous nature-lover or the eco green conscious traveller, there are simply furnished forest-safari style tents on timber decks in the forest with rustic communal timber huts housing a kitchen and ablution facilities.

While you are here, you can go for early morning walks meandering along winding mossy pathways in our ancient forest where you will hear the rustle of leaves as monkeys scamper along the tops of the trees. You can also have a lazy afternoon with a book at the lotus lily pond set in our park-like gardens alive with bird songs. While dozing under an azure-blue sky you may see the shy emerald green Knysna loerie fly by, and at sunset you can stroll along to our organic vegetable garden to pick some greens for a healthy meal under a starry African night sky.

If you love nature and want to experience a more natural eco environment and don’t need luxuries to enjoy your stay, then you will find Peace of Eden enchanting.

We also have a recording studio where many well-known South African musicians have recorded their award-winning albums, and you may just be lucky enough to be visiting when we have impromptu sunset soiree evenings where you could be entertained by some of our great singers and song-writer guitarists like Nate Maingard, Gary Thomas and blues maestro Dan Patlansky.

We are 15 minutes from Knysna and only 8 km from the N2, on the pretty country road that leads to the Rheenendal village. Beyond the village is a turn-off to the Goudveld Forests, Jubilee Creek, and the historical Millwood Goldmines where you may come across signs of the illusive Knysna elephants that still roam freely in the depths of the vast mysterious Knysna forests.

Our beautiful white, sandy beaches of Buffalo Bay and Brenton on Sea and the Knysna river estuary are a mere ten minute drive away and we are an hour's drive from most of the famous attractions and adventure activities of the Garden Route.
