Set in the heart of Pondoland at the mouth of the insanely beautiful Mdumbi River, Freedom O'Clock offers comfortable accommodation with commanding views of the ocean, river, mountains, and Tshani point with its perfect right-hand wave and beach breaks.

Surfing, fishing, canoeing, hiking and biking, snorkelling, bird watching and horse riding are just a few of the activities to busy your day, or just relax and take in the beautiful rural surroundings.

For those who have not yet travelled to the Wild Coast it should be pointed out that you will be travelling in an under-developed region. The variety and quality of goods and services you may be accustomed to are not always readily available.

Freedom O' Clock is set in a remote and primitive region, where even the provision of fresh water can not be taken for granted. Taking this into account we aim to achieve the highest possible standards and we feel it is best to make you aware of this.

If you prefer luxury to comfortable living then the Wild Coast may not be for you.

It has been said that Buccaneers is a bit like a village because of the way it is spread over eight hectares of wild coastal forest right next to the stunning Chintsa Beach. Many describe it as a place to come home to and a legend in its own time. For us it is home and for the past 12 years we have been sharing it with people just like you - travellers from all over the world.

We have created a wide range of accommodation and activities to suit many different needs. Buccaneers Lodge is a haven of tranquility and natural delights. Guests can enjoy quiet beach walks or canoe trips up the Chintsa River or reading a book in the secret bird hide on our own dam. Buccaneers has a lovely lively bar which has certainly seen some great revelry in its time. Our stunning tropical pool is a busy spot in the summer months when a gorgeous poolside café offers decidedly decadent refreshments including divine pizzas. Every day we have some sort of free activity so you can relax and meet the rest of the gang.

Meals are optional but hard to resist. A different dinner is available every night and we always offer a good vegetarian option. We offer famous candlelit dinner parties three times a week and hearty meals in the pub. Breakfasts are leisurely affairs taken in the View of Africa Room with its sweeping views of the Chintsa Bay.

Activities available include marvellous beach horse rides, an excellent surf school, divinely relaxing massages, Chintsa Beach and country bicycle rides, and weekly visits to Bulugha Farm School for a heart-warming Xhosa concert and a chance for you to contribute to our feeding scheme. Right on our doorstep, the Inkwenkwezi Big 5 Game Reserve offers excellent game drives and a unique opportunity to get up close to elephants.

Sharks Point offers rustic self-catering accommodation in an unspoilt paradise off the beaten track. If that is what you are looking for then you have come to the right place. The Wild Coast coastline offers some of the most spectacular scenic destinations on the South African coastline, and Sharks Point is located in the section of the Wild Coast that was previously known as the Transkei.

Sharks Point is the ideal destination to just sit down and relax, or for the more sporty inclined it also offers some great rock and surf fishing, kayak fishing, mountain biking and much more. Sharks Point is located approximately 25 km south of Port St Johns, as the crow flies.

Accommodation is offered in four rustic wooden Wendy houses, each containing a double bed and a fold-out couch that can be used as a double bed. The cabins have incredible views of the beachfront. There are also three non-electrified campsites that can accommodate both tents and 4x4 trailers.

The ablutions have hot water supplied by a donkey, or you can heat up a jerry can and enjoy a bush shower. The communal kitchen is equipped with basic utensils, pots and pans, electricity, fridge and freezer, cutlery, crockery and braai facilities.

Activities include fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, motor biking, quad biking, swimming, whale and dolphin watching, spear fishing, 4x4 trails, snorkelling, kite surfing and hiking.

Amapondo Backpackers nestles in lush coastal forest, overlooking a river valley and the swimming and surfing beach. Amapondo is an ideal base for tours of this awesome region with its rural villages, authentic sangoma trance dancing and drumming. The sardine run, whales, dolphins and the warm Indian Ocean bay make this the perfect paradise throughout the year.

Enjoy breathtaking waterfalls, coastal hikes (the Coffee Bay hike starts here), beach horse rides and sundowners on the cliffs. We do free daily hikes to the Bulolo Waterfall, Silaka Nature Reserve and the local village. For the more adventurous spirits, take a trip off the beaten track on an off- road bike. Every Wednesday is Texas Hold Em Poker. Lie in a hammock with an organic veggie juice or grab a surf lesson or early morning yoga session on the beach.

Relax in the hands of the qualified massage therapist and reflexology. Our restaurant specializes in fresh seafood and will tantalize your taste buds. Drum or fire dance in our jungle bar or get down to African township rhythms. We offer camping, double and family rooms, en-suite cabins and dorms. All our accommodation has great sea views.

Jungle Monkey is situated in the rugged and untouched heart of the Wild Coast, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Here, we are still impressed by what nature brings forth patiently and by the result of its rejuvenation. Port St. Johns is home to many rare species. Watch the parrots or go on a boat trip to see whales and dolphins during the sardine run.

The stunning views and tranquil surroundings invite to go exploring. Stroll through the traditional Pondo villages or climb the rolling hills with our guides. We offer light hikes as well as adventurous full day trips.

Enjoy a therapeutic massage and have a swim in our pools, sleep in our comfortable doubles, triples, the safari tent, dormitories or camp in the garden.

Our restaurant offers a broad selection of hearty meals and the vibey bar invites to settle down after an adventurous day. Enjoy regular live performances by local artists or jam together on our fully equipped band stand. Use our instruments or bring your own.

Just remember when the Pondo Fever strikes, you might never want to leave again.

Go a little or a lot crazy at this brand new backpackers located midway between Port St Johns and Second Beach. The main house has dorms, a self-catering kitchen and spacious dining room. Scattered around the garden are a variety of cottages and apartments. Everyone who works here is slightly mad, but so friendly that you’ll soon find yourself playing and tea partying along day and night.

Spend sunshine hours swimming on Second Beach or exploring dense coastal jungle. The abundant bird life makes Port St Johns a haven for birdwatchers. Go for a hike or cast a line into the Indian Ocean. You can even catch the ferry across the Umzimvubu River, take a tour of local communities or go on a guided coastal hike. After a busy day, re-join the Mad Hatter madness in the pool room or bar before heading to the restaurant deck for a meal overlooking Pondoland’s rolling hills and thriving communities. The food served here is fit for a Queen of Hearts.
