Approximately 2000 million years ago, a meteorite of approximately 10 km in diameter collided with the Earth, causing the biggest and oldest impact site. Thabela Thabeng lies in the midst of this World Heritage Site, nestled in between the mountains and Vaal River only 100 km from Johannesburg.

Olienhout Lodge is a beautifully decorated lodge with exceptional views overlooking the Vaal River and surrounding mountains. It is situated in the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site, a mere two hours' drive from Gauteng. It is a self-catering lodge and can sleep up to eight people.

The Loch House is a four-bedroom, self-catering house on the northern banks of the Vaal River close to the Barrage. The house is situated on a large, two-hectare private property with a 50 meter private riverfront covered with Willow trees.

Hire a self-drive houseboat. Take the helm of a houseboat and navigate the Vaal Barrage! Cruise the 55kms of South Africa’s most dynamic, permanently navigable inland waterway. The houseboat can sleep up to five people. An easy hour’s drive south from Joburg and you can be on your own self-drive.

Fantastic views over the reserve from our lapa, also ensures peace and quiet in the middle of town. The eagles nesting at the nearby botanical gardens often hunt in reserve for dassie and guinea fowl, amongst others.
