Set in the southern reaches of Tanzania’s remote Tarangire National Park, Oliver’s Camp is an echo of the early days of East African safaris; when the camp offered a warm bed and crackling fire at the end of the day, yet the real magic was out there in the wilderness. Alongside the 10 en-suite tents that make up Oliver’s Camp, Little Oliver’s with just five tents offers a more private and intimate safari experience. Neither lack creature comforts, but both camps are aimed at travellers searching for untamed Africa.

For Tarangire is truly a wild land; a land of lion and leopard competing for prey, of enormous elephants dwarfed only by the towering baobab trees. Unlike the Maasai Mara and Serengeti, in Tarangire guests can enjoy walking safaris, off-road driving and wilderness fly-camps. This is a park where animals reign; a park that offers rich rewards for exploring off the beaten track.

WHY CHOOSE OLIVER’S AND LITTLE OLIVER’S CAMP?
• Iconic old East Africa safari camp feel.
• Exciting variety of wilderness experiences.
• Exceptional walking guides.
• Exclusivity of the camp in the more remote southern section of Tarangire.
• A year round safari destination.

If you are looking for an authentic safari experience under traditional canvas, showcasing spacious views and enriching culture, Tarangire River Camp is the perfect choice. The camp always has a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

Tarangire River Camp is set within 25000 hectares of concession area. The camp overlooks a branch of the Tarangire River, included on the land. The property is in a great location for game viewing since it is only 3,5 km from the main entrance to Tarangire National Park.

Traditional grass thatching adorns the roof of the main lodge structure, which is set off the ground on an elevated deck. The breezy lounge boasts ample seating in a relaxed open-air environment. The dining area, where culturally inspired meals are served, consists of simple safari-style seating and the elevated position allows for excellent views over the riverbank below.

A bonfire area and game viewing deck connects the dining and lounge areas, and overlooks the same stunning views. A smaller, secondary game viewing deck rises above the ceiling and offers a high, intimate perch. The lodge’s small, informal gift shop offers the families of the nearby Maasai villages a chance to sell their handmade wares.

The advantage of being located outside the park is that the various activities not permitted within any of Tanzania’s northern National Parks, is possible, including guided walking safaris. Other activities include game drives, bird watching on the shores of Lake Manyara, and cultural safaris visiting the Maasai and Datoga people whose bomas populate the adjacent land.

Whistling Thorn Tented Camp is a small tented camp adjacent to Tarangire National Park, famous for it’s big population of
elephants. The camp is set in in a typical African thorn-tree bush landscape, right next to the Kwakuchinja Wildlife Corridor. This corridors used by the animals to go from one park to the other, in search for water and grasses.

During the migration periods you may be lucky to witness the migration of zebras, wildebeest and elephants right from the veranda of your tent. Not only is the camp interesting for it’s nature; Whistling Thorn Tented Camp is situated in a conservation area for the Masai, and the camp is operated by people from the surrounding Olasity community.

We have a very good relationship with the local villagers, and operate several community projects with the profits from our camps. The Masai people are more then happy to tell you all about their culture and lifestyle and show you around in their houses.

Whistling Thorn Tented Camp can accommodate up to fifteen guests in six spacious canvas tents under permanent grass-thatched roofs. Each tent has shelving, a writing desk and an en suite bathroom with flush toilet and a hot shower. From the private, shaded veranda, you can overlook the parklands of Whistling Thorns and the flat-topped acacia trees where giraffe, zebra and elephant graze, and the occasional Maasai warriors wander by.

Whistling Thorn Tented Camp is a perfect facility for small groups or individuals who would like something out of the ordinary for their safari experience. This is where nature, culture, and conservation come together in the heart of wild Africa.

Many a childhood would have been spent playing in the world of ‘make believe’. Within this imaginary existence many of us will have climbed and played high up in the bows and branches and, for the lucky few, built a ‘palace’ in the sky. It is this nostalgic sparkle that is all too visible in the eyes of the ‘grown-ups’ who gaze upon Tarangire Treetops for the first time. Tarangire Treetops sits serenely in a private game reserve bordering the Tarangire National Park - Tanzania.

As you arrive at the Lodge, you are immediately greeted by a blaze of colour and a host of smiles all of which belong to the local Maasai tribesmen who have become part of the enchanting story that is Tarangire Treetops.

Centred about a Main Lodge, which itself encases a thousand year-old baobab tree, Tarangire Treetops comprises of 20 tree houses all of which are elevated above the ground affording views over the tops of surrounding marula and baobab trees.

Each tree house boasts some of the largest bedrooms to be found in any camp or lodge in East Africa, and all with an exotic double shower en-suite bathroom. With furnishings that create warmth and demonstrate a commitment to local craftsmanship, the ‘up-in-the-air’ experience is completed by the open-fronted room design affording views across the Tarangire plains from an expansive but private balcony.

Dining at Treetops sustains the momentum of undeniably memorable moments. Whether enjoying a lantern-lit dinner in a traditional boma echoing to the sounds of Maasai chants, or eating poolside by candlelight while a wealth of wildlife comes to drink at the Lodge waterhole, Treetops creates memories by the minute and in so many differing ways.

However it is the pure delight and sheer pleasure of Tarangire Treetops that will remain with you for years to come, and will keep you returning, if only in spirit, to this delightfully dreamlike lodge.

After enjoying a long leisurely game drive between herds of wild animals and along miles of Africa’s seemingly endless roads, you come over a slight rise and the lodge appears almost immediately below you. Built to blend in with the vastness of its surroundings, Tarangire Sopa Lodge lies hidden among the kopjes, ancient baobab and grasses of the Tarangire National Park; home to the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa. Many can be seen around the lodge, allowing visitors a close encounter.

While our circular guest suites with their high, conical roofs fan out to either side of the public areas, it is worth mentioning a word of caution here. Because the lodge is not fenced in any way, wild animals are at liberty to come and go as they please and transits to your room and back might be, but rarely, delayed by an elephant or two. This is the only reason our guards will insist on taking you to and fro at night.

Once inside the coolness of your room, you will be delighted at its space and airiness, and also the views from its sheltered veranda. With its mini-bar, two double beds and an extremely spacious, well-appointed bathroom, you can only wish that you were staying an extra night.

On the other side of the reception lobby is our coffee shop where you can enjoy one of a wide range of Tanzanian highland brews together with one of our freshly baked pastries, while adjacent to this area a flight of steps takes you down into the dining room for a leisurely meal beneath an intricately painted mural painted onto a high gable at one end of the room. However, if you relish the great outdoors, the restaurant has a terrace running along one side of its entire length so you can enjoy your breakfast with a view over the park’s tree-studded, grassy plains. Weather permitting, lunch is always served at the lodge’s lowest level and beside the swimming pool with its central island and bar beside a dry river bed which fills up during the rainy seasons. As for dinner, the dining room has an enormous outdoor patio where we serve dinner every other night, and this experience beneath Africa’s star filled sky is quite simply one you will never forget.

Built on different levels, the main public area building offers an extremely cool respite from the outdoor heat as soon as you step into the reception. With a perfumed towel and a chilled welcome drink in hand, you suddenly become aware of the sheer size of the lobby with its glistening marble floors, colourful hand-woven carpets, and an incredibly high roof. From here a short flight of steps takes you up a level and into the lounge and bar with floor to ceiling windows, an outdoor terrace where you can enjoy an evening sundowner and, later perhaps, a game of pool in the area behind the bar.

This is a unique opportunity to experience and explore the Tarangire and Manyara ecosystem. Maramboi Tented Camp offers permanent camp facilities, with endless vistas of rolling golden grasslands and palm-lined desert between Tarangire and Manyara Lake. A visit to the area is essential for anyone interested in evolution, the origins of mankind, and an explanation of the Rift Valley and Africa's big picture. It is a complete semi-desert experience focusing on safari walks and game drives.

An impressive landscape from the Rift Valley gives the visitor an amazing natural welcome to an area extraordinarily rich in wildlife. The camp offers stunning views of the Manyara National Park, the Rift Valley, and the Ngorongoro Highlands and on clear days, even Oldonyo Lengai - a sacred mountain to the Masai.

In the wet season, the Manyara and Tarangire Pans fill with water which attracts huge flocks of flamingos and other wading birds. The area is also the only place in East Africa where one is often able to see the migration herds of tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebra, followed by predators. Although the migrations do occur in other areas of Tanzania, the tree cover prohibits a view of the magnitude that you are able to see at Maramboi Tented Camp because of the exposed nature of the surrounding grassland.

The spacious tents are built on ample wooden decks and feature en-suite facilities, a private verandah and 24 hour 220V electric lighting. Activities include game drives, guided walking safaris, bird watching on the shores of the not-too-distant Lake Manyara, and cultural interaction with Datoga and Masai tribes, whose bomas populate the adjacent land.

The Ecoscience property is situated on the northeastern border of Tarangire National Park, 20 km south of the village of Makuyuni on the main tourist road to the Serengeti National Park.

The architecture of the huts and restaurant is based on the Maasai hut or banda, yet in an original, modern and minimalistic version. There are six large huts with large terraces. Each hut has a double bed, couch, wardrobe, office desk and an en-suite bathroom. Each unit offers a spectacular view of Radilen Hill at the opposite side of the valley. Internet access is available.

The restaurant is the relaxation area with sitting areas, fireplaces, a bar and dining room where guests will taste the most unforgettable food found anywhere in the country.

The local village is called Mswakini Juu and the 80-hectare property borders an important migration route of elephants, zebras and other animals. The area is locally called “the small Serengeti plain” and most of the land is kept natural. We built our luxurious boutique lodge and our science centre on the northern edge.

The views from Ecoscience are spectacular. Our natural landmarks are Mounts Hanang and Kwaraha which are both volcanoes, as well as Tarangire Hill, Radilen Hill, Loikisale Hill and the Mount Monduli and Mount Meru volcanoes.

Game drives within Tarangire National Park are a year-round wildlife spectacle. The river flows through the park and is a magnet for wildlife, especially large populations of elephant. The park also contains varied and contrasting landscapes and unrivalled bird life.

The lodge was the first to be built in the park. Since 1985, it has been owned and managed by the Simonson family, who have added a very personal touch. At the heart of the lodge are the impressively high thatched roofs of the lounge and dining area. The open design allows for an uninterrupted landscape view and captures the cooling breeze. Our five bungalows are built from local stone in the circular style of Maasai huts. The thick walls, large windows and thatched roofs ensure that they remain cool. We have five bungalows suited as triples or family units. All the beds have mosquito nets. Our spacious en-suite bathrooms include a large shower and plenty of solar heated water. Each bungalow has a shaded veranda allowing for comfortable viewing of a large water hole.

Enjoy our international homestyle safari cuisine in our spacious, open-air dining room. All of our fruit and vegetables are freshly grown at Simba Farm, on West Kilimanjaro.
