Description
Venture to the Deep South for a celebration of the life and culture in Cape Town's Southern Peninsula. eMzantsi means 'in the South' in isiXhosa and the fourth eMzantsi Carnival is all about "Putting the Unity back into CommUnity" and a challenge to xenophobia and cultural stereotyping in all forms. Come and show your children a vision of a united South Africa – come see the eMzantsi Carnival!
People with heart and soul from Fish Hoek, Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Kommetjie, Simon's Town and surrounding areas sprang into action to help displaced people in need at Soetwater, demonstrating true community spirit that crosses racial and religious boundaries. Now the challenge is to uphold that momentum and the belief that we can make a difference when we stand together.
Minstrels and marimba bands, gumboot dancers and belly dancers, stilt walkers and surfers alike will be taking to the streets in a procession that will number more than 1 500 people. This year for the first time representatives from Muizenberg, Vrygrond and Seawynds will join Sun Valley, Masiphumelele, Ocean View, Kommetjie, Noordhoek, Fish Hoek, Scarborough, Glencairn, Red Hill and Simon’s Town.
The post-carnival show will also feature cultural highlights of our pan-African neighbours, with contributions from Zimbabweans, Somalians, Malawians and Congolese living locally.
Need to know? Spectators are advised to park at Sun Valley Mall and stroll down Ou Kaapse Weg to the four way intersection to watch the procession aproach from each corner of the Peninsula. The procession starts at 10am and there will also be a free stage show at 12pm by comedian Mark Sampson on the Sun Valley green. Local bands, singers and dancers, craft and food markets will entertain the whole family. So why not come and join the fun, eMzantsi style!
