Description

Acclaimed guitarist and SAMA nominee James Grace will be presenting his final solo concert of 2009 at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch on Thursday 10th December. Spanish Fiesta! will feature works from Grace’s newly released album Sevilla – Music of Spain II, Granada (his debut CD and the original Music of Spain) and his 2008 SAMA nominated release Café Latino.

The concert will also feature a guest appearance by Bridget Rennie-Salonen who will be joining James on stage for a performance of Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango. ‘I wanted to celebrate 2009’, says Grace. ‘It is the centenary year of the deaths of two great Spanish composers; Isaac Albeniz and Francisco Tárrega, who between them wrote some of the most well known and loved pieces in the repertoire.

I haven’t played solo in Stellenbosch for at least two years, so I thought it would be ideal to present a concert which not only featured music from the Spanish albums, but which also celebrated the guitar’s role in Latin America, as I did on my previous CD Café Latino. Then I thought it would be even more fun to include a guest artist, so I asked Bridget (Rennie-Salonen) to join me for Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango, a really exciting work that explores the whole development of the tango. We’ve performed this piece together countless times, and it’s really an audience favourite!’

Grace’s album Sevilla – Music of Spain II was released in August this year, and in addition to pieces by Albeniz, Tárrega and Granados, also features works by Joquín Rodrigo (composer of the famous Aranjuez Concerto), Manuel de Falla and the lesser known Catalan Joaquín Malats.
