Enter the true nature of comfort at Spitskop Nature Reserve and Kalahari Monate Lodge, where the fusion of nature and hospitality is unequalled. You are welcomed to a reserve which, in essence, is a fine example of the famous Kalahari Desert. The reserve is situated 13 km north of Upington, en route to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, and measures 5641 hectares. It derives its name from a prominent steep rocky hill close to the entrance.

According to archaeologists, Spitskop was formed by the earth’s crust being eroded away and after many, many years only the harden rock remained, based on the fact that it is granite. This beacon from the earth has been a landmark used by all since the first nomadic travellers, and on a clear day, can be seen from up to 40 km away.

Kalahari Monate Lodge is situated just across from the entrance to Spitskop Nature Reserve. This new lodge consists of six luxurious self-catering, fully furnished chalets with air-conditioning, as well as camping facilities with very neat ablution blocks. There is also a swimming pool for guests to cool off in. Barbecue and camping facilities with ablution blocks can be found in the camping ground, and the lodge also offers two thatched lapas and a small kiosk.

Kalahari Monate Lodge offers an abundance of birdlife for bird enthusiasts. There are also various game species in the area, including gemsbok, springbok, zebra, eland, steenbok, wildebeest, camel, suricate, and ostrich. A telescope on the hill allows guests to view wildlife or enjoy the landscape. There is 37 km of gravel road through the park if you wish to go on a self-drive game-viewing trip, and three hiking trails are also available.

Wild Ivory Eco Lodge is a private and exclusive bush lodge situated in Welgevonden Game Reserve which is a well-established Big 5 game reserve in the Limpopo Province of South Africa and in the heart of the Waterberg Biosphere.

The lodge is elevated and overlooks a wooded plain and private waterhole. The elevated position offers beautiful and uninterrupted views over the reserve and up the Waterberg escarpment. Wild Ivory is one of the few lodges in South Africa which is eco-friendly and low impact. The lodge has natural, rustic finishes and the main lodge has a large raised deck with swimming pool, sunken boma and elevated view of the waterhole and plains below.

Accommodation is in luxury tents which are more like canvas lodge rooms with lovely views and very well-acquainted bathrooms. Large double beds and outside lounges allow you complete comfort and relaxation in a true wilderness setting. Dinners are around the campfire and traditional South African meals are served in the main lodge. Self-catering group packages are also available. The rates include two game activities with one of our game rangers.

The lodge and all materials used are eco-friendly and completely ‘green’. The lodge blends in to the surrounds and has a low impact on the environment; effort has been made to ensure the lodge is sustainable and has a very low carbon footprint. It makes use of solar powered renewable energy and sustainable borehole water with solar supply, enviro-friendly paints and consumables have been used. No hard woods have been used in construction and there is a completely sustainable water supply with an eco-friendly sewerage system.

In addition to the Big 5, there are numerous other species which occur within the reserve. It also offers some of the best rhino and cheetah sightings in Southern Africa. The Wild Ivory Eco Lodge is positioned in one of the ‘sweeter’ bushveld areas in the western section of the reserve, with an abundance of plains game which will in turn attract the large number of predator species which occur in the reserve.

Marc's Treehouse Lodge

Marc’s Treehouse Lodge offers rustic but comfortable accommodation geared to put one in close contact with the sights, sounds and scents of the wild. The tree houses are made of wood and reeds under thatch and blend harmoniously into the dense riverine vegetation. Creature comforts include electric fans, mosquito nets and comfortable beds, with linen, towels and soap provided. Each tree house has its own private ablutions and features a viewing deck overlooking the perennial Klaserie River or the "Breakfast Dam", where animals often come to drink.

The tree houses are unobtrusively located on the elevated banks of the river, providing excellent views of the terrain. Marc’s Treehouse Lodge forms part of the Motlala Game Reserve which boasts well-watered grazing for its varied fauna. White and black rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and numerous antelope have made the Motlala Game Reserve a real wildlife paradise. Among the predators, leopard and hyena are more often heard than seen. The nights at Marc’s Treehouse Lodge are enriched by the calls of its denizens; the eerie whoops of hyena, the spine-tingling wail of jackals, the distant roar of lions, and the plaintive cry of the thick-tailed bush baby add an unforgettable aural dimension to one’s appreciation of the bush.

Birds tend to be more vocal than most other creatures. In the thick canopy of the treetops at Marc’s Treehouse Lodge, probably due to restricted visibility, the avifauna are particularly noisy as they warn of predators, call their mates or proclaim the boundaries of their territories. Among the feathered fraternity at Marc’s Treehouse Lodge, colourful specials include narina trogon, purple-crested touraco, trumpeter hornbill, natal francolin and natal robinchat. The early morning cacophony of birdsong is a stark reminder that one is deep in the riverine bush.
