The atmosphere at the Lion King Bush Camp is informal, authentic, and ideal for the adventure traveller.

Come and dine under the stars, before communing around the fire and listening to owner Nahim entertain with stories from a lifetime spent in the African bush.

Accommodation consists of four private and luxurious tents, each with an outside seating area, a double bed and private bathroom with shower.

Full-board rates include accommodation, three home-cooked meals a day, and an early morning tea and coffee. End your weekends off with a traditional Sunday roast, complete with all the trimmings.

The camp is home to many species of bird and other small animals, with each occupying their own place amid the surrounding trees and bush land.

Samburu National Reserve offers indescribable beauty, an abundance of wildlife, and a sense of remoteness which sets it apart from its more famous counterparts. It is a wonderful base from which to explore greater Samburu, the spectacular mountains of Matthews Range and the undulating hills of Laikipia to the west.

Samburu Sopa Lodge

Located inside the Samburu National Reserve in Northern Kenya, Samburu Sopa Lodge is built atop high ground allowing panoramic views of the vastness of Samburu shrub land and the hills beyond. The lodge is built to reflect the architectural heritage of the local communities whose sons and daughters make up the majority of the work force at the lodge. Fifteen cottages, each with two bedrooms are built in an arch formation on either side of the public areas to surround the waterhole but leaving a wide gap to allow the animal’s free movement to the water.

Our guest cottages follow the exterior design of centuries-old, traditional Samburu housing, but the similarity stops there. Instead, our structures have much higher ceilings; far larger windows; much more floor space; and en-suite bathrooms.

All our well-spaced cottages have two airy and comfortable, tastefully furnished guest rooms, each with two queen-size beds; a large dressing table; a lavishly appointed bathroom; and an open-air veranda which overlooks the waterhole. The two guest rooms closest to the reception area provide for the physically challenged.

The dining room is on a slightly higher level than the lounge, and it shares the totally open-air atmosphere to allow you views over both the waterhole and the panoramic landscapes beyond. While artistically positioned wall niches house various forms of natural decorations, and the furniture follows traditional designs, the curvaceous buffet tables and live cooking areas offer a wide selection of delicious fusions of different culinary disciplines coupled with garden fresh fruits and vegetables. Our tastefully decorated main bar is located against the rear wall of the lounge, and is adjacent to the walkway and sunbathing area around the swimming pool with its shaded sunken bar where you can sit and talk to our Samburu barman at will.

The coolness beneath the high ceiling of the circular, grass thatched reception area and its adjacent boutique is a welcome respite from the outdoor heat of the equatorial sun, and its earthen colours and traditional Samburu decorations blend in perfectly with its surroundings. Like all the public areas in the main building, there are no windows and cooling breezes flow freely through the large, amorphous spaces in the walls.

The swimming pool is a pleasure in this arid, semi-desert region with its dry heat and low humidity. Tiled with various shades of blue mosaic tiles, and surrounded by a local flat stone sunbathing area, our large free form pool, with its adjoining children’s pool, outdoor shower, and sunken bar as well as views over the waterhole, provides you with the perfect solution when you want to be outdoors but keep cool at the same time.

Larsens Camp

Your exclusive Larsens Tent is secluded and private, the perfect place to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the Ewaso Nyiro River during the Kenyan night. Located on the riverbank, the tents are named after local Samburu birds, and as you curl up in the safari chair on your private porch, you may even notice one of these birds.

Truly a place of authentic opulence, the spacious king-size bed, with its feather-light sheets, is complemented by authentic furniture, local decorations, and lavish amenities. As you watch the sun rise over the Kenyan safari from your tent, you will wonder why you have not been here before.

Larsens Camp offers you the perfect way to pass the lazy Samburu afternoons. Larsens’ pool, looking out onto the hot and dusty game park, is furnished with plush lounge chairs, a nearby Jacuzzi, and poolside service. You will feel the worries of the world melt away as you slip into the cool water or let a warm Jacuzzi relax your muscles. The hours will quickly fade away in your Larsens paradise, and it is easy to realize that life in this Kenyan resort cannot be surpassed.

At Larsens Camp, you will have the unique opportunity to dine by the river for each of your meals. No true paradise would be complete without its gastronomy, and a sumptuous feast will be spread before you for every meal at Larsens; gourmet four-course meals are served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Watch elephants cross the river and giraffes meander along the opposite bank while enjoying the chef’s many delicious creations. If you have a special request, Larsens will be happy to cater to your wishes, whether you are craving authentic Korean food or local Kenyan specialties. The birds will eat from your hands as you relax on the riverside, should you be generous enough to share a homemade roll with them. The evening’s candlelight dinners, serenaded by the gentle sounds of the Kenyan night, are the perfect way to end the day.

Larsens Camp’s game drives are an unforgettable part of your experience. Dreams come alive as you experience what cannot be captured in pictures, film, or music; the heartbeat of Kenya.

You will have to option to go on morning or afternoon game drives in an authentic Land Cruiser with an open roof, large windows, and your own expert driver. The drives journey through the game park, discovering distant corners of Samburu while you lean onto the warm wood of your Cruiser’s door and watch the park pass outside.

Climb up to the treehouse deck, furnished with a full bar, to bid farewell to the day while sipping your drink and enjoying special appetizers whipped up by Larsens’ ingenuous chef. From your treetop perch, you’ll be able to watch the sun set over the Samburu hills as the colours turn from yellows to reds to night’s royal blues.

This exotic camp is perched on the sand banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River, beneath wide-spreading kigelia trees and acacia elatiors. It is home to some of the largest bulls in Samburu which can often be seen in the river, resting under an acacia tree or picking pods beside the Tents.

Our six specially designed tents are made for maximum coolness, privacy, and protection. Each Tent hangs under a wide thatched roof with its own veranda. Each bathroom has plenty of cool air and sun-heated water. Laundry is hand washed and ironed daily with a charcoal heated iron.

Relax on luxurious cushion-filled sofas and chairs built from twisted acacia branches collected from trees felled by elephants. Aromas of fresh herbs grilling over delicious food drift in from the kitchen. The power supplied to all our lanterns and lamps are run off solar panels. Everything at Elephant Watch is very simple and our goal is to make your stay as comfortable, fun and as stress-free as possible.

Our specialized guides meet their guests at the airfield and drive them gently through the reserve, spending time with many of our well-known elephant families, as well as introducing them to some of the particular northern inhabitants. An elaborate picnic lunch is served by the river in proximity of the elephants and eventually guests arrive at camp and are welcomed by a line of tall, slim Samburu warriors holding cool drinks. They will accompany guests to the huge mess tent which is hung with swathes of brightly coloured material floating in the wind.

‘Karibu’, the welcome sign says as you drive into the spacious grounds of the Samburu Game Lodge. Karibu means welcome in Swahili, and upon arriving at the lodge you will be face-to-face with rolling lawns, vibrant flowers, and soothing lounge areas. Collapse into an oversized chair in the tranquil lobby filled with the scent of spicy cedars, order a refreshing drink, let your eyes close, and realize amid the mists of the cultural surroundings that you never want to leave Samburu Game Lodge.

You will be able to find your every desire at the lodge, ranging from fantastic meals to comfortable accommodation and, not to mention, countless entertainment possibilities. Established in 1962, Samburu Game Lodge is the most historic location in the reserve and has been the premiere choice of many since the very start of safaris in Kenya.

Gazing out over the river, the rooms at Samburu Game Lodge are a place to unwind after a long day on a safari. Your journey will still continue from the surroundings of your room, as you can watch the crocodiles in the river and the elephants on the opposite bank from your window. Local artwork decorates each room: duom palm seeds hang on the walls, lampshades are fabricated from Kenyan tree leaves, and authentic Samburu stones form the smooth floor.

Samburu Game Lodge offers you two of the best locations in the Samburu Game Reserve to sip a drink while overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River; the Crocodile Bar and the Vulturine Bar. The Crocodile Bar is on the river level, and you can observe the crocodiles bathing just a few metres away. A special feature of this property is the evening feeding; watch as crocodiles crawl out of the river to fight over their food. The Vulturine Bar is perched among the trees and juts out over the river. Comfortable seats ring this bar, and you can hide from the sun in the afternoon or watch it set in the evening while sipping a Samburu Special, the lodge’s signature drink.

Samburu Game Lodge’s game drives are unforgettable. Dreams come alive as you experience what simply cannot be captured in pictures, film, or music: the magic of the true Kenya. Choose to embark on the morning game drives, the afternoon game drives, or both in an authentic Land Cruiser with an open roof, large windows, and your own expert driver.

Game drives can be dusty and Kenyan afternoons hot, so Samburu Game Lodge provides the perfect solution for you with its pool and Jacuzzi. Pass the afternoon in tandem with the setting sun while splashing in the spacious pool, soaking up the sun on the comfortable lounge chairs, or relaxing in the shade of the flowering trumpet vines.
