Excelsior Manor Guesthouse

Sleeps 18 in 9 rooms

Grandeur, spaciousness, comfort and serenity - the attributes of a palace, however large or humble...
Grandeur, spaciousness, comfort and serenity - the attributes of a palace, however large or humble the size of the kingdom. If you have ever felt the need to experience a palace in the Breede River Valley, Excelsior is opening its doors to you.

During 1859 the first member of the De Wet clan began clearing the veld of the Little Karoo in today’s Robertson-Ashton area to create pasturage. By the end of the nineteenth century his three sons already showed their resourcefulness by breeding horses and vines on this land. The youngest brother, Jacobus Stephanus or Kowie, soon became one of the most successful ostrich breeders in the Robertson district on his farm Excelsior. As ostrich plumes were the essence of haute couture at the time, the affluence of the trade was soon reflected in the “feather palace” architectural style. Kowie de Wet built at that time, producing an enormous farmhouse on Excelsior with the characteristic elegance of the Victorian era.

As the age of mechanization rolled in, the invention of the motorcar brought the fashion of ostrich feather millinery to a grinding halt. With the collapse of the ostrich feather industry, Kowie and his son Oscar again resorted to breeding horses and vines, with Excelsior being one of the few farms which was not declared insolvent at the time.

Today the farm has been planted with noble cultivars like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are successfully sold locally and abroad.

The Manor House is the original home and has been extensively restored to its former glory. It has nine luxury en-suite bedrooms prepared for the guest lodge. The spacious rooms provided adequate internal space for all this renovation without altering the external façade. Thus the tranquil proportions of the exterior have been retained with the original wooden window frames and gables all intact from a century ago.

Many old trees grace the garden and these have been maintained. The northern side now offers a refuge of hedged in tranquility with fragrant old roses and a rose labyrinth to restore one’s soul. The south side of the house opens onto a wooden deck surrounding a deep blue swimming pool. This elevated but secluded deck offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the vineyards, the Langeberg, splendid sunsets and generally the ‘kingdom’ of this fertile valley.

Enjoy scrumptious breakfasts before going on excursions for the day, or order lunch and lounge at the pool. For the more active, you can enjoy fishing and swimming in the dam across the road, and walks through the vineyards. Or why not take a donkey cart ride to one of the six wine tasting facilities within walking distance for the bold. After a long day dinners will be served on request in either the dining room or out on the deck.

The De Wets look forward to welcoming you to share in the tranquility of their farm and the old-time splendor of the feather palace of Excelsior.

Nestled between the Langeberg Mountains and the Breede River, the Robertson Wine Valley forms part of the longest wine route in the world, Route 62.  The town of  Robertson was founded in 1853 and named after a Scottish Dutch Reformed Church Minister, Dr. William Robertson.  It had initially been famous for its ostrich farming, but this industry collapsed after World War 2, when farmers turned to wine, fruit and olive farming as well as world renowned racehorse breeding.

Gannakop guest house is situated on the 330ha Arbeidsgenot (work joy or work in joy) farm in the Eilandia Valley on the Breede River. Gannakop is named after the “Ganna” plant witch grows widely on the hillside and produces a beautiful yellow flower after the first winter rains.  The farm produces plums and apricots for the export as well as wine grapes for the local market. The old milkstall (see gallery) has been transformed into a rustic luxury self catering house.  While guests will enjoy all the amenities of a modern guesthouse, many of the original features of the farm have been retained.

On arrival, guests will be welcomed in typical country hospitality, by Mike and Maryke van Schoor who live on the farm.  Maryke can assist with catering arrangements for groups of 20 or more, on request.

    Robertson South Africa

    Robertson Guest House Accommodation
Robertson is known as the small town with a big heart. Located in the shadow of the majestic Langeberg mountains with the Breede River as its life blood, Robertson is the western gateway to The Heart of Route 62, only 1 and a half hours leisurely drive from Cape Town.

With 150 years of history, Robertson has grown into one of the most attractive Cape Winelands towns. Victorian buildings, jacaranda-lined streets, rose lined vineyards, columns of red and yellow cannas as well as bright bougainvilleas all form the back drop to this delightful town.

The region may be best known for its wines but the variety of attractions, activities, accommodation, and culinary delights on offer - combined with spectacular scenery and the warm hospitality of the people, makes it a superb getaway.

In one of the most beautiful valleys in South Africa, Robertson is surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains and needs to be visited for the peacefulness of its valleys and the beauty of its green vineyards.

Situated along Route 62 (reputedly the longest wine route in the world) in the Cape Winelands, the Robertson Valley Wine Route is officially recognized, and its limestone rich soils and diversity of terroir produce world class wines. Not only are the wines full of character, but so are the winemakers; they love what they do and it shows. Brandy tastings and tours are also possible at the Klipdrift distillery.

Olives are grown and processed locally and Robertson's farm stalls overflow with fresh produce, dried fruit, homemade breads, jams and preserves. Combine olive tasting with some cheese tasting and you'll spoiled for choice. The area is also becoming one of the pioneering areas for organic farm products. Stop off at Affie Plaas Farm Stall for wine at cellar prices and great gifts for the home.

Get outdoors and relax on one of the popular river boat cruises, go on a game drive or explore the hiking trails in the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve. Wander around the spectacular cactus gardens at the Sheilam Cacti and Succulent Garden or explore the extensive gardens, mazes and the labyrinth at Soekershof Private Maze and Botanical Garden.

Biking, canoeing, river rafting and horse riding are popular activities, while Bird's Paradise is great for the kids with birds from Central America, Africa and Asia, as well as monkeys, crocodiles and a play park.

No matter what time of the year, Robertson offers a superb quality of life. Vineyards and orchards stretch from outlying farmlands into the very heart of the town. Enjoy living with wine ,fruit, horses, colourful characters and clean country air as everyday components of life.

Amazing annual events to look out for are the Robertson Wacky Wine Weekend, Robertson Slow and Robertson Wine-on-the-River.
