The internationally acclaimed South African opera, Princess Magogo, has it all and is coming to Jacaranda City soon! Stunning design, exhilarating dancing, wonderful singing, lavish costumes - this vibrant show makes a bold statement that opera has never before seen in this country. Featuring the finest young South African operatic talent, Princess Magogo is sure to be one of the most exciting and innovative musical events this year, opening its long awaited run at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria from Saturday 28 March to Saturday 4 April 2009, and at the
Johannesburg CIVIC Theatre from Sunday 26 April to 10 May 2009.
The opera is based on the life of Princess Constance Magogo
kaDinuzulu (1900 – 1984) who, to this day remains a Royal legend –
widely recognized as a singer, composer, musician, teacher, and
political activist. According to the opera’s librettist, Themba Msimang
“she was a custodian of the people’s culture and born at a crucial time
in Zulu history. At the time the British were trying to squash the Zulu
monarchy. They were amazed to discover how intense and how intricate
the Zulu royal system was of which she was a direct descendent”.
